This study focuses on what kind of role TV could play for improving the leisure activities of the elderly. In fact, the Korean aged usually spend a great deal of time for watching television in their leisure time. Like in Korea, it is believed that most of the aged around the world spend much of their leisure time for watching TV.
As the result of this study, 76% of the respondents answered that they prefer TV to other mass media. In addition, most of them - 90% of the respondents - told that they watch television at their home and 55% of them watch TV programs by themselves. 41.5% of them watch TV programs from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. As the aged people have the right to choose TV programs as they want, they are also the main consumers of TV programs. TV programs which the aged people prefer are news program and drama that amount to 82.5% and 52.5% respectively. As such, the elderly actively make use of TV programs as the means of entertainment, relaxation and getting information.
On the other hand, 99.5% of the respondents said they are satisfied with TV programs while 68% of them are not in the aspects of contents of the TV programs which deal with the aged people's rights and interests. Additionally, in relation to the satisfaction measurement of contents of TV programs, 70 percent of the respondents answered that the contents are mostly focused on those that attract youth interests. 82 percent respondents told that there are few programs for the aged to be entertained and obtain information, and 42 percent pointed out that image of the aged people are distorted in TV program differently from their real life. 83.5 percent of them said that there is no program which depicts the aged people as leading figure.
Then, how are the old people depicted in TV programs? Korea has already entered the aging society as well as information-oriented society and digital age, but there are extremely few TV programs for the aged. Besides, it seems that most TV programs for the aged are made by producer's intention rather than reflecting the aged viewer's desire. Even though there are some TV programs which show the aged people's life, they do neither represent the aged's opinion nor overcome the lopsided way as they work out programs and produce them. Accordingly, such programs are not for the aged consumers and limited in bringing up alternatives at the same time.
It is true that the aged are mostly alienated and excluded by not only ourl society but also media that reflect the society and describe it in different way. Such exclusion usually takes place in TV programs. Besides, image of the aged people projected by TV programs are mostly negative. The image makes them wilt and passively participate in leisure activity and community.
In our life, there is no way we could avoid good or bad impacts from TV programs. Consequently, we need more active criticisms and suggestions to correct the image and issues of the aged people distorted by TV programs. Academic circles of social welfare for the elderly should seek the ways to make sure that the public could show concern about issues of the elderly, and suggest that policy makers reflect the issues in working out welfare policy on the more active basis than ever before.
When the issues of elderly are dealt with just like our own matters, the aged people, who have been neglected by society and TV programs, could actively participate in social activities while facing their matters and not being tied to TV in meaningless way.
As written on United Nation's Principles for Older Persons declared in 1991, the elderly should be able to live in secure and adaptable environments according as they prefer and develop their full potential while they should have access to educational, cultural, spiritual and recreational resources.
TV needs to play its own constructive role to make sure that our society could fulfill the principles above mentioned.
