It is purported in this study to investigate how the educational improvement program for the handicapped recognition, which is for handicapped students in common elementary school to be adapted to school life, affects on normal students' recognition and attitude of acceptance for the disabled students.
The subject of this study is total 122 students who studying in J elementary school in Pohang city, and they are 4th graded students from 4 different classes.
Based on the theoretical background and precedently performed studies, the experiment courses were consisted of theory education, group discussion, audio-visual education, and work-study for the handicapped with a view to increasing normal children's understanding and acceptance for the disabled children. And the training for above courses were done total 4 times at 40 minutes in a week.
The followings are the results of the study.
First, the educational improvement program for the handicapped recognition influenced on positive effect for normal children to change their understanding on the handicapped. The experiment group participated in the program compared with control group showed that the total record was positively increased in describing emotion, physical appearance, learning actions and social actions to the handicapped children.
Second, the educational improvement program for the handicapped recognition influenced on positive effect for normal children to change their acceptance for the handicapped. The experiment group participated in the program compared with control group showed that the total record was positively increased in the attitudes of school life, individual life, and dilettante, entertainment activities.
From the above results of study, the educational improvement program for the handicapped recognition can promote the interaction between normal children and the handicapped children by changing understanding and acceptance attitudes on the handicapped positively, so it can contribute to make social integration in the end. The obstacle factors which hindered the interaction between normal children and the handicapped children were normal children's lack of understanding, negative prejudice and bias on the handicapped children.
Through this study, it is concluded that the lack of understanding and prejudice on the handicapped can be changed by education program of understanding on the handicapped.
