The purpose of this paper was to provide fundamental materials for the development of senior citizens' welfare policy and welfare programs to improve their mental health. To do so, the study examined the mental health of senior citizens in relation to three variables : general characteristics of individual subject, the degree of self-esteem, and the level of social support. In this study, 265 elderly persons were randomly sampled among those who were over 60-year-old and were asked to participate in answering questionnaires. The results of this study were as follows.
First, age, educational back ground, health condition, diseases, hobbies, a person who the elderly can depend on, and numbers of group which they joined had statistical significance on the mental health of the elderly, while sex, religion, marital status, and the numbers of family members had no statistical significance on their mental health.
Second, the level of self-esteem of the elderly was middle or low. For the subcategories of social support, evaluation support was ranked the highest followed by emotional support, informational support, and material support.
Third, the subjects of this study showed mid-level of mental health overall, and the memory and cognitive ability were measured higher than the emotion of pleasure and displeasure.
Fourth, there was high correlation between low factor of self-esteem and low factor of mental health, and between low factor of social support and low factor of mental health, which implicated that the degree of mental health was higher as the self-esteem was higher and the more social support they had.
Lastly, self-esteem represented 36.8% of mental health, and social support represented 9.1% of mental health.
The results of this study suggest that self-esteem and social support are the exclusive factors in mental health of the elderly. Thereby, national intervention in terms of social welfare to prepare for the aging of the elderly should be implemented in order to improve senior citizens' mental health.
