British fashion culture roots as a big group in modern fashion culture and is considered as a firm style itself. Anglomania which appeared after 18th century recognized both British fashion culture and fashion style and also played an important role as a secured modern fashion. This is not a passing phenomenon but showing influence throughout British ideal and culture until 21st century.
This study is meaningful by examining reasons and causes of Anglomania’s appearance in modern fashion culture. First, books related to British history, culture, Anglomania, fashion reference books, internal and external dress and ornament history reference books, design reference books and research papers were used to examine U.K and British fashion culture. Also in modern fashion culture, A study of Anglomania were reserched the study range from the latter half of the 20th century until 2007 S/S collection. It was analyzed works of fashion designers, representatives of Anglomania; Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen, Hussein Chalayan, John Galliano, Burberry, Stella McCartney, Stephen Jones, Shaun Leane, Philip Treacy and so on.
Anglomania is a movement by fans in 18th century who supported overall in British society-culture. By this movement, British identity was rose and strong patriotism was appeared. British fascination which stepped up by Voltaire(1694~1778), was continued in politics, economy, society, culture and art and is spread out throughout European countries starting from France. This movement is not just a temporary phase in 18th century but British fashion culture influence affect in the whole world as getting to 21st century.
Anglomania was formed in British cultural art history, - especially in art, it inferred British people’s special character and quality “Englishness”- was appeared in 18th century and is continuing until present. This represented 1) patriotic tradition, 2) naturalism which appeared by naturalistic ideal and garden imitation, 3) British simplicity which spread out by dandies during 19th century, 4) sarcastic expressions based on British concept - free and flexible thinking led to a different social class who accept minorities and continued to deviation which was shown by dandies in anti-society attitudes.
Next is about results from studying expressed Anglomania’s characteristics in modern fashion based on luxurious fashion culture which caused traditional costumes and materials’ appearance and sub-fashion culture which caused young generation’s street style.
First, the tradition of Anglomania is expressed with both British image design and traditional design. This led to express British symbols and royal costumes into fashion items. Furthermore, this led to create new style which combined past and present elements.
Second, Anglomania’s naturalism pursuit expressing natural British simplicity and return to nature. This was expressed by using nature things as fashion objet. To show fashion naturalism, same concept of nature’s image was used in clothing, hats and accessories. Artificial ornaments and trimming were replaced with nature pattern or nature’s objects. Also simple and natural style is expressed by using cotton, hemp or natural color. Flowing curved silhouette resulted feminine image. In modern fashion, Anglomania’s naturalism expressed natural romanticism.
Third, Anglomania minimized ornaments or details and used simple silhouette to express and show British simplicity and dandy style costumes. In women’s clothing, traditional tailoring expressed chic style and using luxurious materials and achromatic color showed simplicity.
Forth, Anglomania created humor by combining different colors, exaggerating in expressing materials and forms. Also this sarcastic expression was appeared in parody and was used in not only clothing but also hair, makeup, and staging.
Fifth, Anglomania’s deviation was caused by British concept which allows flexible and free. To express deviation, Anglomania molted from existing image and beauty. Resistant social attitude and anti-style (like punk), which makes creator flexible, helped expressing deviation. Exaggerating and extreme expressing led to destroy certain forms. Also not only using general fashion materials but mixing different styles expressed the avant-garde fashion.
As it was mentioned, Anglomania’s appearance and characteristics are not just temporary but after 18th century it conveyed British ideal and continued through British fashion culture. Nowadays, Anglomania is focused as a “British fashion style” by showing British identities, characters, Englishness in fashion. In modern fashion, Anglomania is spreading out in the world and will be continued. This analysis can be applied in developing design and educating fashion information for grasping world’s modern fashion trend and recognized by publics.

영국 패션문화는 현대 패션문화에 하나의 큰 축으로 자리 잡고 있고, 확고한 한 스타일 영역으로 인식되고 있다. 18세기 이후 나타났던 앵글로마니아(Anglomania)는 영국 패션문화와 영국의 패션 스타일을 인식시키고 현대 패션의 자리매김의 주도적인 역할을 했다. 이것은 일시적인 현상이 아니라 21세기에 이르기까지 영국의 이상과 문화 전반에 걸쳐 영향력을 발휘하고 있다.
본 연구는 현대 패션문화에서 나타나고 있는 앵글로마니아의 발생배경을 규명하고, 앵글로마니아의 특성을 연구하는데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위하여 먼저 영국과 영국의 패션문화를 알아보기 위해 영국역사 관련서적, 영국문화 관련서적, 앵글로마니아 관련서적, 패션용어사전, 국내외 복식사 서적, 디자인 서적, 연구논문을 중심으로 살펴보았고, 현대 패션문화에서 앵글로마니아의 특성 연구는 20세기 후반부터 2007년 S/S 까지를 고찰범위로 두었다.
대표적인 앵글로마니아인 비비안 웨스트우드(Vivienne Westwood), 알렉산더 맥퀸(Alexander McQueen), 후세인 샬라얀(Hussein Chalayan), 존 갈리아노(John Galliano), 버버리(Burberry), 스텔라 맥카트니(Stella McCartney), 스테판 존스(Stephen Jones), 샤운 린(Shaun Leane), 필립 트레시(Philip Treacy) 등의 패션 디자이너 작품 분석을 통해 이루어졌다.
앵글로마니아란 18세기 영국 사회문화의 모든 것을 지지하고 이에 심취한 사람들이 일으킨 계몽운동이다. 이에 의해 영국에서는 영국적 정체성이 정립되었고, 강한 애국주의가 나타났다. 볼테르(Voltaire)에 의해 촉진된 영국적 심취는 정치, 경제, 사회, 문화 그리고 예술분야로 이어져 프랑스를 시작으로 유럽전역에 전파되었다. 이러한 운동은 18세기의 일시적인 현상이 아니라 21세기에 이르기까지 전 세계적으로 영국의 패션문화의 영향력을 발휘하고 있다.
앵글로마니아는 영국 문화 예술의 역사 속에서 형성되어 특히 예술적 측면에서 영국인 특유의 기질과 속성인 잉글리시니스(Englishness)를 추구함으로 18세기에 나타나 오늘날까지 이어지고 있다. 이 운동은 영국에 대한 애국주의적인 전통성, 자연주의적인 이상과 정원에 대한 모방으로 나타난 자연성, 19세기 댄디를 통해 전파되었던 영국적 단순성, 영국의 자유로운 사고에 기인하여 풍자적인 표현의 유희성, 자유롭고 유연한 사고는 주류에서 벗어난 사람들을 허용하는 차별적인 계층체제를 나타나게 했고, 댄디를 통해 보여졌던 반사회적 태도로 나타난 일탈성으로 이어졌다.
전통적인 의상과 소재를 나타나게 한 귀족패션문화와 청소년 스트리트 스타일을 나타나게 한 하위패션문화를 근간으로 현대 패션에서 표현된 앵글로마니아의 특성을 고찰한 결과는 다음과 같다.
첫째, 앵글로마니아의 전통성은 영국적 이미지가 표현된 디자인과 전통적 디자인으로 표현되었다. 이것은 유니온 잭과 전통 직물 및 왕실의 복식문화유산을 패션 아이템으로 표현하였다. 아울러 이는 과거와 현재의 요소들을 절충적 결합으로써 전통성과 현대성을 동시에 지닌 새로운 스타일을 창조하였다.
둘째, 앵글로마니아의 자연성은 영국적 소박함과 자연스러움을 표현하고 자연으로의 회기를 추구하였다. 이것은 자연물을 패션의 오브제로 의상, 모자 그리고 악세서리에 사용하였고, 인위적인 장식과 트리밍은 억제하고 자연에서 얻은 무늬나 자연물로 대체하였다. 그리고 소박하면서도 꾸미지 않은 자연스러운 스타일을 표현하기 위해 자연소재인 면이나 마를 사용하였고, 자연색상으로 표현하였다. 현대패션의 앵글로마니아의 자연성 추구는 자연주의적인 낭만주의를 표현하였다고 볼 수 있다.
셋째, 앵글로마니아는 영국적 단순성을 표현하기 위해 장식과 디테일을 최소화하고 단순한 실루엣을 사용하여 댄디 의상과 같이 표현하였다. 여성복에서는 전통적인 봉제기법으로 남성적이면서도 커리어우먼의 쉬크한 스타일로 나타냈고, 고급스러운 소재와 무채색을 사용하여 단순성을 표현하였다.
넷째, 앵글로마니아의 유희성은 소재와 형태의 표현에 있어서 다양한 색상과 과장된 표현과 같은 서로 이질적인 결합을 통하여 의외성을 표현하여 유머를 자아냈다. 그리고 유희적 표현은 패러디의 방법으로 풍자하였고, 의상 뿐 아니라 헤어와 메이크업 그리고 무대연출의 복합적 요소의 결합에도 이와 같은 방법이 시도되었다.
다섯째, 앵글로마니아의 일탈성은 기존의 틀에서 벗어난 것들을 허용하는 영국의 자유롭고 유연한 사고에 기인한다. 패션의 일탈성을 표현하는 데 앵글로마니아는 기존의 정형화된 이미지와 미의 기준을 탈피하여 표현하였다. 저항적인 사회적 태도와 착장자를 자유롭게 하는 펑크와 같은 안티패션으로 일탈성을 나타냈다. 형태의 과장과 극단적 표현으로 형태의 파괴를 추구하였다. 뿐만 아니라 패션의 일반 소재에서 벗어나 다양한 소재를 결합시켜 사용함으로써 실험적이고 조형적인 아방가르드 패션으로 표현하였다.
이와 같이 현대 패션에 앵글로마니아는 일시적으로 나타난 현상이 아니라 18세기 이후 앵글로마니아가 등장하면서부터 영국의 이상이 전해졌고, 이는 영국의 패션문화를 통해 이어진 것이라고 할 수 있다. 오늘날 영국 문화에 기반을 두고 자신들의 동질성을 주장하며 영국인 특유의 기질과 속성인 잉글리시니스를 패션에 표현하는 앵글로마니아는 가장 영국적인 특성을 표현함으로써 현대 패션에서 영국적인 패션 스타일로 인식되었고, 또한 주목받고 있는 것이다. 현대 패션에서 앵글로마니아는 전 세계적으로 확대되고 있고 지속적으로 나타날 것으로 예측된다. 이러한 분석은 현대의 세계패션의 흐름을 파악하고 패션계와 대중에게 인지될 수 있는 디자인 개발과 패션정보 교육에 활용 가능한 것으로 사료된다.
