This study is to look into the background of how Gisaeng, female waitress, had turned around to become movie actress from their original social strata in the early 20^(th) Century, when the Japanese Imperial Government initiated the modernization of Korea and at the same time Giseng was branded as prostitute. It looks into the three leading actresses, namely Lee Wolwha, Bok Hyesook and Seok Geumsung through their masterpieces and lives. In a unusual backdrop of Japanese colorization it specially focuses on the relationship between Gisaeng and actress.
Under the Government controlled system in Chosun Dynasty, Gisaeng was referred to as "Yoack"(meaning female instrument performer), with a more emphasis on the art skill than the vocal skills.
However, Gisaeng was required to change in that colonial modernization era. The Japanese Imperialist colonized the Korean Peninsular, trying hard to turn Gisaeng as the art skilled performer into the vocal performer. With introduction of Japanese counterpart into Korea, the 2 & 3rdlevel of Gisaeng were positioned as prostitute as a natural process.
While some of those 1st level of Gisaeng learned to use their professional talent and skills to commercial value, aggressively participating in a public entertaining circle of the colonial modernization era. In its process of social transformation, the new genre of stage play found its firm place. With the movie industry about to set in, Gisaeng could not have been underestimated. In the Confucianism dominant society, women's outdoor activities were a social taboo. Moreover, then the man masqueraded themselves as women in the theatre stage. With Gisaeng debuting as actress, they took that role partially, making the way for other female to be able to enter into the movie industry. Leading them were Lee Wolwha, Bok Hyesook and Seok Geumsung.
In the background of transformation from Gisaeng to actress, the very negative awareness of the actress played a huge role. Due to the dominant influence from the Confucianism in Chosun Dynasty, the general public awareness was that actress was synonymous with prostitute. Because of this and shortage of actress then, Gisaeng was readily introduced into the industry. Based on their own talents and artful skills, Gisaeng had already been active to perform vocal play on stage and therefore, they did not have any sense of refusal. Another reason behind was that Gisaeng had more freedom and natural than other household women under a strict traditional value of family system.
On the contrary, for normal women to be actress, economical factors played decisive role. Although the Theatre Towolhoe brought huge fame to Lee, Bok and Seok in its heyday, it did not make successful in ticket sales, which led direct to economical difficulties. Both male and female entertainers were not able to receive monthly pay, hence female actress who brought home the bacon got no other choice but to become Gisaeng. Another case was that personal problem could account for it. Scandalous rumor related to personal love affairs or similar cases would mean an end to their actress careers.
Those actress who became Gisaeng during the Japanese colonial rule changed the image of traditional Gisaeng completely. Gisaeng as female art performer originated in Koryo Dynasty had seen its image distorted and transformed by the Japanese colonial power, as a result of which, the very Gisaeng had lost the original role, going into history.
