The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of children's stress coping styles on school adjustments and Internet game addiction dangerousness , as well as the effects of school adjustments on Internet game addiction dangerousness divide into male and female.
The subjects of this study were 662 students in the 4th, 5th and 6th grade in four elementary school located in Seoul area.
In order to measure the child's stress coping styles for this study, Daily Hassles Coping Scale was used, which was developed by Min, Ha-Young and Yoo, An-jin(1998), which modified by Park, Jin-ah(2001). To measure school-related adjustment for school-age children, School-related adjustments Scale was used, Which developed by Im, Jung-soon(1993), which modified by You, Yoon-hui(1994). Finally, in order to measure the child' Internet game addiction dangerousness for this study, Internet game addiction scale was used, which was developed by Lee, Hyoung-cho(2002), which modified by Kim, Young-min's(2003).
The collected data was analyzed by SAS statistics program. The frequency and percentage were calculated to investigate the general characteristics of the subjects. To investigate reliability and question, Pearson's correlation, multiple regression analysis, and path analysis were used.
The results of this study can be summarized as following,
First, the child's stress coping styles had influenced on Internet game addiction dangerousness. Namely, active coping style is negatively related with Internet game addiction dangerousness, with which aggressive and passive/avoidant coping styles are positively related. In addition, in the case of girl, social support seeking coping style is positively related with Internet game addiction dangerousness.
Second, the child's stress coping styles had influenced on school-related adjustment. In other words, aggressive coping style and social support seeking coping style are positively related with school-related adjustments, with which passive/avoidant coping styles are positively related.
Third, in observing the path analysis between child's stress coping styles and Internet game addiction dangerousness in their school-related adjustments, it was found that 'active', 'passive/avoidant', 'aggressive' coping styles have influence upon directly and indirectly from school-related adjustments on Internet game addiction dangerousness of boys and girls. Especially, in the case of boy, social support seeking coping style have an effect indirectly from school-related adjustment on Internet game addiction dangerousness.
