이문열의 성장소설 연구 : 「우리들의 일그러진 영웅」과 「젊은 날의 초상」을 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이문열은 1979년 동아일보 신춘문예에 중편소설 「새하곡」이 당선되어 정식으로 문단에 등단하였다. 그는 일찍이 한국근현대소설사에서 유래가 없을 정도로 짧은 기간에 엄청난 작품을 쏟아낸 작가이고, 현존하는 어느 작가보다도 폭넓고 다양한 독자층을 확보하고 있는 작가이다. 그러나 이문열이 현대문학사에서 차지하는 위상은 단순히 소설의 양이 많은 작가라거나 독자층이 넓은 작가라거나 또는 외국에 비교적 널리 알려진 작가라는 데 있지 않다. 양적 업적보다는 질적인 면에서 이문열은 현대소설사에서 획기적인 이정표를 세워 놓았다고 할 수 있다.
이문열 문학에 대한 논의가 활발하게 이루어져 온 것은 당연하다고 하겠다. 비평계와 문학계에서 이루어진 이문열 문학에 대한 논의 가운데 본 연구자가 주목한 것은 이문열 문학의 성장소설적 측면에 관한 것이다. 이문열 문학의 성장소설적 측면에 대한 기존의 논의는 1) 원론적 차원에 머물거나, 2) 작가의 정치성향으로 작품을 재단하는 문제점을 지닌 것으로 판단된다.
이에 본 연구는 이문열의 기존 작품 전체에 대한 총체적 해명보다는 성장구조로 이루어진 이문열의 성장소설을 분석해, 작품 속에 내재된 성장요소와 그 의미를 찾아보고 나아가 이문열의 성장소설이 가지고 있는 문학사적 위상을 정립해 보고자 한다. 작품들 가운데 성장구조가 잘 드러나 있는 대표적인 작품 「우리들의 일그러진 영웅」과 「하구」, 「우리 기쁜 젊은날」, 「그해 겨울」의 세 편의 중편으로 이루어진『젊은 날의 초상』이 고찰 대상이다.
제 2 장에서는 성장소설의 개념과 유형을 정리하고, 이문열 성장소설의 전개양상을 정리해 구조상의 의미를 찾아보았다. 제 3 장에서는 아버지와의 갈등, 악과 죽음의 발견, 보조자의 도움의 측면에서 각 작품의 성장요소를 분석하였다. 이를 바탕으로 제 4 장에서는 작품의 성장요소와 그 의미를 분석했는데 결과를 정리하면 이러하다. 이문열의 성장소설은 1) 주인공이 부딪힌 청년의 고민을 사회, 또는 아버지란 경로를 배제한 채 오로지 자기 자신에게 집중시켜 처음으로 청춘을 객관적 대상으로 다루었으며, 2) 주인공의 완전한 성숙이나 각성을 보여주기보다는 성숙과 각성의 문턱에 이르지 못하는 대부분의 한국 성장소설과는 달리 결정적 이니시에이션의 유형에 해당하는 것으로 기존의 성장소설에서 보여주지 못했던 유형적 특질을 보여주고 있다. 따라서 이문열의 성장소설은 한국 소설사에서 가장 성공한 성장소설이라는 문학사적 위상을 지닌 것이라 평가할 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Lee, Moon Yul was formally debut to literature circle when his novelette 「Sea Ha Gok」was elected in Dong-A Ilbo's literature contest in spring in 1979. He was the only one author who happens to publish enormous number of work in such a short time of period in the contemporary Korean novel history and he is the author who secures extended and various class of readers than any existing author. However, the honor that Lee, Moon Yul possess in modern history of literature is not whether simply he published number of book or has various class of readers or that he is relatively known author in outside country. It can be said that in quality side rather than quantitative achievement, Lee, Moon Yul has accomplished epochal milepost in modern history of literature.
It seems obvious that discussion on Lee, Moon Yul's literature had been active. In discussion on Lee, Moon Yul's literature made from criticism and literature side, the researcher has focused on the youth novel profile of Lee, Moon Yul's literature. The discussion of basic on Lee, Moon Yul's literature of youth novel profile was concluded to have problems such as 1) staying in dimension of principles and 2) decide work on author's political propensity.
As for that, this research will analyze Lee, Moon Yul's youth novel formed by youth structure rather than general explanation on whole existing work of Lee, Moon Yul thus finding youth elements and the meaning inherented within the works and futhermore, make the thesis for literal honor that Lee, Moon Yul's youth novel withholds. The considerate subject is 『A portrait of the days of youth』 which were composed by his representative work「Our twisted hero」and 3 volumes of novelette 「The estuary」,「 Out happy days of youth」 and 「Once in a Winter」 that shows most well of youth structure in all his works.
In chapter 2, concept and patterns of youth novels was arranged and search the meaning of structural by arranging evolve aspect of Lee, Moon Yul's youth novel. In chapter 3, from conflict with father, discover demon and death, help of assistant the youth elements of each work was analyzed. And with these, in chapter 4, youth elements of works and that meaning were analyzed and the following shows when adjusting the conclusion. The youth novel of Lee, Moon Yul shows unique pattern that most of existing youth novel was not able to bring such as 1) dealing with youth as objective target for the first time by concentrating only to oneself eliminating the path of society or father on problems of youth that main character had to face and 2) the pattern come under decisive initiation different from most korean youth novel which shows rather than the complete maturity or awareness of the main character or cannot come even close to maturity or awareness. Therefore, Lee, Moon Yul's youth novel can be evaluated as the most successful youth novel in korean history of novel withholding the honor in the history of literature.
