The purpose of this study was to examine the realities of weight- lifting teams in secondary school in terms of the screening, college entrance and nurturing of weight lifters, academic guidance for them and budget operations. It's basically meant to help improve the management efficiency of the teams and to produce superb weight lifters.
Questionnaires were prepared in three categories including the screening and college entrance of weight lifters, their fostering and academic education, and the budget management of weight-lifting teams. The subjects in this study were 89 secondary school instructors in charge of weight-lifting teams. They included 56 middle school teachers and 33 high school teachers. After a survey was conducted, the collected data were analyzed to obtain statistical data on percentage and frequency by the grade of school, major, location and gender.
    The conclusions were as follows;
    1. Screening and college entrance of weight lifters
First, as for the number of weight lifters in each school, the most dominant number of weight lifters in the middle schools was four or less, and that in the high schools was five to eight. Most of the weight lifters in the selected schools were especially built for physical education, and the most common number of the selected P.E.-talented students was three or less. The largest percentage of the instructors had to select four or five weight lifters a year, and they believed players should start doing weight lifting as elementary school upper graders.
Second, regarding the screening of the weight lifters, the instructors selected players in person, and parents who didn't consent to make their children a weight lifter gave them the biggest trouble in times of screening.
Third, as to the career choice of the weight lifters, most of the middle school players went up to high school as P.E.-talented new students, and most of the high schoolers preferred to enter college. So the largest percentage of the players went up to school of higher grade as P.E.-talented incoming students. An award-winning experience was one of the major decision-making elements about their entrance into school of higher grade, and the future possibilities of the players were considered in some cases.
    2. Fostering weight lifters and their academic education
First, concerning the class participation of the weight lifters, the players who ordinarily took morning lessons only outnumbered those who took all the classes every day. The greatest percentage of the players were underachievers, and many got average grades. And basic academic deficiency and lack of concern for studies were cited as the reasons for that most often.
Second, the weight-lifting teams took part in athletic games three or four times a year on the average. The players scarcely received any supplementary lessons though they missed classes while participating in athletic games. The weight lifters worked out for a mean of three or four hours a day.
Third, the most common annual camp training term was 20 days or less in the middle schools, and the largest group of the high school players stayed in training camps for 50 to 60 days or all the year round. During camp training, the vast majority of the players exercised for five or six hours a day. The instructors singled out player screening as the biggest difficulty in guiding the weight-lifting teams.
    3. Budget management of the weight-lifting teams
First, workout supplies were mostly provided by their schools. The largest number of the schools paid their coaches from their budget, and the second greatest number of the schools had no coaches. It's found that the weight-lifting teams were still managed without coaches in those schools.
Second, as for membership fee, the greatest percentage of the players paid no membership fee. Concerning living standard, most of them weren't well off. For the majority of the players, camp training expenses were covered by their schools.
Third, the most prevalent yearly budget earmarked for the weight- lifting teams amounted to three million won or less and five million won in the middle schools and to nine million won or more in the high schools. The most common total amount of financial aid offered to them was one to three million won, and the coed teams were given more financial aid.
