This study examined the tendencies of theses for degrees related to parent education of the parents with preschool children according to the passage of time. To this end, the study has presented the annual distributional maps of tendencies regarding research methods and contents of such theses and analyzed the distributional maps and tendencies of research subjects and methods depending on the categories of research contents. This study collected and analyzed a total of 634 master and doctoral degree theses published from 1996 to 2005 and related to parent education for the parents with preschool children aged between 0 and 5. The research content categories were divided into upbringing behavior, role recognition and attitude, parent education and programs and others. As for data analysis, percentages and frequency analysis were conducted by SPSS 12.0.
Research results can be summarized as follows according to the research subjects established by this study. First, in terms of types of degrees, master degree theses accounted for 97.3 percent and the number of these degrees rose continuously until 2002 before increasing sharply in 2003. Doctoral degree theses accounted for 2.2 percent. The overall number of research subject theses gradually increased up to 2003 before decreasing by degrees thereafter. The number of theses targeting fathers was small and it grew steadily from 1996 to 2005. The number of theses studying teachers was small but showed a steady increase until 2003 before showing a decrease in 2004 and thereafter. Regarding the tendency of subject children ages, the number of theses continued to rise for the ages between 3 and 5. The overall number of theses for the ages between 1 and 2 was not large but it showed a continuous rise between 1996 and 2005. Theses linked to elementary school ages and mixed ages (others) were not found between 1998 and 2000 but such themes continued to become research subjects in the years except the above period although the number of such theses was not large.
As regards the tendency of research approaches, most degree theses conducted quantitative research and the number of theses that conducted both quantitative research and qualitative research exceeded the number of theses that conducted qualitative research only. Regarding the annual tendency of data collecting methods, questionnaires were the most frequently used data collecting method in the degree theses related to parent education for the parents with preschool children. The number of theses using questionnaires rose steadily until 2003 before it showed a decrease from 2004. Although structural observation, structured interviews, interviews and documents were not used frequently, such data collecting methods were used continuously for the 10-year period studied in this paper.
Second, theses on parents, mothers, fathers and teachers most frequently dealt with role recognition and attitude and theses on parents, mothers and teachers most rarely dealt with parent education and programs followed by upbringing behavior. Theses on fathers showed little differences in quantity between the category of upbringing behavior and the category of parent education and programs. The number of theses related to role recognition and attitude for each age of subject children was overwhelmingly large while there was no difference in quantity between the category of upbringing behavior and the category of parent education and program. No theses on elementary school and mixed ages dealt with the categories of upbringing behavior and others.
In the case of the content categories of quantitative studies, the category of role recognition and attitude was most frequently found, followed by the categories of parent education and programs and upbringing behavior. Theses that conducted both qualitative and quantitative researches most frequently adopted parent education and programs as their research approach, followed by role recognition and attitude and upbringing behavior. With respect to the content categories of research types, theses that used correlation research and were related to role recognition and attitude were most frequently found. Except for the category of others and the area without data found, theses that used literature research and were related to parent education and programs were found most rarely.
As for the content categories depending on data collecting methods, of the theses using inspection and structural observation, those on role recognition and attitude were most frequently found and the number of theses on upbringing behavior was similar to that of those related to parent education and programs. Theses using questionnaires and quantitative literatures most frequently dealt with role recognition and attitude and the number of theses on parent education and programs was about double that of those on upbringing behavior. The number of theses using participatory observation and other data collecting methods was small but such methods were evenly used for each content category.
