This study was conducted to examine differences in language according to the type of sex role identity. For this purpose, we tested the sex role identity of 396 six?grade students using the Korean Sex Role Inventory, and analyzed 128 of them who were classified into 8 groups with 16 members each according to gender * sex role identity using KLIWC (Korean Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count) concerning whether sex role identity, in connection with gender, causes differences in language.
From the results and discussion of this study were drawn conclusions as follows. First, the effect of gender was observed in variables such as pronouns, personal pronouns, first?person pronouns, verbs, movements and second?person pronouns, but there was no interaction effect among the variables. Specifically, pronouns, personal pronouns and first?person pronouns were used more frequently by female students than by male ones, and verbs, movements and second?person pronouns were used more frequently by male students than by female ones.
Second, the effect of sex role identity was observed in language variables related to physical conditions and functions, body conditions and symptoms, metaphysical issues, and death. In the language variable of physical conditions and functions, femininity was used more frequently than non?differentiation, and in the language variable of body conditions and symptoms, bisexuality was used more frequently than masculinity, and in the language variable of metaphysical issues and death, bisexuality was used more frequently than masculinity.
Third, interaction effect according to the type of sex role identity was observed in language variables such as dependence nouns, cognitive process, expectation, sensory?perceptive process, and death. Among them, the language variable of death was redundant with the effect of sex role identity, so it was considered an interaction effect.
In conclusion, the fact that language is different according to the type of sex role identity and according to interaction effect between sex role identity and gender suggests that there are differences in language caused by sex role identity, which is a psychological gender that cannot be explained by biological difference. Accordingly, sex role identity is regarded as an important factor that explains individuals? language characteristic.
