The aim of this study was to determine the effects of bicycle training by analyzing the possible effect of bicycle commuting on physique and fitness in male middle school students (third grade). Analysis results are as follows:
Bicycle commuting had no significant effect on height, body weight, waist size, hip size, thigh size and BMI.
Bicycle commuting group showed a significant increment of WHR as compared with that of non-bicycle commuting group, suggesting that the bicycle commuting increased waist size.
Result of this study showed that bicycle commuting improved the fitness such as agility, muscular endurance, flexibility and cardio-respiratory endurance.
As shown above, bicycle commuting was very effective to improve the fitness and time-saving because of no need of extra time for exercise in young adults.
This study suggests that bicycle commuting can be a useful alternative option for problematic issues on the commuting system raised by extensive use of automobiles.
As it can provide safe, convenient and affordable way to commute not only younger generations but also for senior citizens in the community. However, some questions must be settled in prior to adopt bicycle commuting as an alternative way of commuting, such as, lack of infrastructures, in convenient systems for bikers, and systematic support from civil administrations.
The current study may provide basic data to make the bicycle commuting more active. However further study is required to elucidate the precise role of bicycle commuting.
