The purpose of this study was to examine how students who were bullied by classmates unleashed their anger and adjusted themselves to school life and to seek ways to help expedite their school adjustment.
The subjects in this study were 1,004 boy and girl students in their fourth and sixth years of elementary school in south Gyeongsang province. Their experience with group bullying, ways of expressing their anger and school adjustment were tested, and the findings of the study were as follows:
First, the elementary schoolers investigated didn't have much experience to be bullied. As for the types of group bullying, verbal abuse was more common than alienation or physical attack. By gender and academic school year, the boys had a more experience to be bullied than the girls, and every type of bullied experience was more widespread among the boys than among the girls. There wasn't a significant difference between the girls and boys in being left alone and being physically abused, but the boys underwent far more verbal abuse than the girls did.
Second, the school children's level of anger-out and anger-in was low, and they could occasionally anger-control. By gender and academic school year, the sixth graders did anger-out, anger-in and anger-control more than the fourth graders did. There was no gap between the boys and girls in anger-out and anger-control, but the boys's anger-in level was higher than the girls.
Third, their school adjustment was above the average, which implied that they were well adjusted to school life. By area, their social relations ranked best, followed by rule abiding, school event participation, academic activities and relationship with teacher. As to the impact of gender and academic school year, the girls outdid the boys in school adjustment. They were better adjusted to social relations than to the other school life areas, and they were relatively less adjusted to their teachers and academic activities.
Fourth, concerning relationship among school adjustment, types of experienced group bullying and style of expressing anger, overall group bullying had a significantly negative correlation to school adjustment, and all the bullying types, including alienating, verbal and physical attack, had a significantly negative correlation to school adjustment, which signified that those who were more frequently abused were less adjusted to school life.
There was a significantly negative correlation between anger-out and school adjustment and between anger-in and school adjustment. Those who unleashed and restrained their anger better were less adjusted to school, and anger -control had a significantly positive correlation to school adjustment, which implied that those who kept better control of their anger settled in school better.
Fifth, the school adjustment of the elementary school youngsters was significantly affected by anger-out, anger-control, anger-in and verbal abuse. All the variables, except anger-control, had a negative impact on their school adjustment.
The findings of the study illustrated that the students who unleashed and curbed their angers more fell behind in school adjustment, and that those who controlled their anger better were more excellent in that regard. In other words, those who were able to unleash their anger in the right way and at the right time could be better adjusted to school life owing to their psychological well-being.
