The purpose of this study was to examine meaning of experience in young children's walking activity. Particularly focusing on the qualitative and aesthetic characteristics of experience in young children's walking activity. The subjects in this study were young children in two different daycare centers where walking activities were conducted as part of daily routine programs. The young children who were at the age of five in Western age were observed, videotaped and interviewed during their walking activities from July 6 through September 30, 2006, and a journal was written. All the collected data were classified and analyzed by theme.
The major findings of the study were as follows:
First, the qualitative characteristics of the walking experiences of the young children were investigated in terms of three categories including the body, play and thinking. While taking a talk, they felt nature through every part of their bodies, and showed unique gestures that were active yet static. They played with plenty of diverse natural things, and they laughed often, became generous and sometimes sung a song to express their delights. Furthermore, they learned what life was like and were aware of its preciousness. Finally, they thought in a more diverse and creative manner in the course of taking a walk than in the structured classroom, as they got to unveil more creative imagination, spirits of inquiry, animistic thinking and divergent thinking.
Second, the aesthetic characteristics of the young children's walking experience exactly corresponded to the findings of different researchers. First of all, they were absorbed in what they discovered in nature, and they totally concentrated their mind on it, instead of just taking a glance. The walking activities on which less restrictions were imposed let them relax mentally and physically, and they were able to play freely. What's more, they felt nature was wonderful and marvelous, which they didn't experience in everyday routine life. They came to realize the unique features of nature while looking at it in person, and it could be named an active discovery. Besides, they focused on play without being distracted even in distractive and messy situations, which could be defined as wholeness.
