The purpose of this study is to investigate Korean teachers' questioning behavior and the teachers' responses to students' answers in middle school. Furthermore, this study aims to find out the reality and problems of teachers' questioning behavior and make them supporting data for the effective lesson.
The specific problems of this study are like these :
first, How are the Korean teachers' questioning types in middle school?
second, How are the Korean teachers' response types to students' answers?
third, How is the relation of the Korean teachers' questioning types to the teachers' response types about students' answers?
For this study, five Korean teachers' lessons are recorded and used as the analysing data. Teachers' questioning types are analyzed by Blosser's Science Questioning Category System and George's Response Types Category System.
The results of this study are as follows :
first, Cognitive Memory Questions are used the most by korean teachers. Convergent Thinking Questions, Divergent Thinking Questions, and Evaluation Thinking Questions follow the Cognitive Memory Questions in order. The more teachers ask students per class, the higher percentage of Cognitive Memory Questions tends to be.
second, Acception is the most frequent response type expressed by teachers to students' answers. Clarification demand, asking other students, evidence demand, and refusal follow the next in order. Reception is the common response type of every teachers, and the other responses are different from teacher to teacher.
third, Acception is the students' most response type in every questioning type based on the analysis of the relation between the Korean teachers' questioning types and teachers' response types about students' answers. The other response types show a little difference according to questioning types. When teachers ask students convergent questions, students respond diversely.
Based on the results of this study, it could be conclude that teachers' questioning types and response types are not various, and most of them are monotonous. This means teachers' questions and responses don't contribute to the improvement of students' divergent thinking ability. and doesn't make interactive classes between teachers and students.
Therefore, teachers should do their best to make diverse questioning types, and the theory and practice related with questioning types have to be emphasized in teacher training programs.
