This research intended to study the current status of the digital divide between elementary school students in depth. For this reason, the researcher investigated mind index, support index, access index, use index, and skill index of information based on variations such as residence, sex, parents'' education level, school grades.
The influence of each variation to the digital divide will be also discussed. In addition, the researcher studied more detailed and actual status of the digital divide by interviewing students.
The research questions to achieve this purpose are as follows:
First, will there be a digital divide between elementary school students depending on their residence?
Second, will there be a digital divide between elementary school students depending on their sex?
Third, will there be a digital divide between elementary school students depending on their parents'' education level?
Fourth, will there be a digital divide between elementary school students depending on their school grades?
Fifth, what is the influence of the variables such as residence, sex, parents'' education level, and school grades to the digital index?
To verify these research questions, the researcher examined previous studies, investigated suitable questions for a digital divide survey, and interviewed with students. The researcher chose the Kamnam district which is the most advanced information area and the Ganghwa district in Incheon, which has the least information available to compare the following factors: residence, sex, parents'' education level, and grades.
Based on the studied material, this research was conducted to find the information index according to the variation factors and also to find the influence of the variation factors to the information index.
First, a t-test was conducted to find the information index based on the variation factors such as residence area and sex. One way-ANOVA was conducted to determine the differences of the information index based on parents'' education level and students’ school grades. The results are as follows:
It was possible to find the significant differences of digital divide based on residence, parents'' education level, and grades. In the case of residence, there were significant differences in mind, access, and skill. In the case of parents'' education and school grades, there were significant differences in mind, support, access, and skill. However, the sex was not a main factor for digital divide.
Second, regressive analysis was used to find the influence on digital divide of variation factors. The results are as follows:
The most influenced variation was parents'' education level with sex following next in case of the information mind index. Parents'' education level only affected the information support index. For the information access index, the most influenced variation was residence area with parents’ education level following next. In case of the information use index, only parents'' education level was affected. Both parents'' education level and school grades had about the same affects on the information skill index. The result showed that the total information index indicated that parents’ education level was the most influenced factor and students'' school grades followed next.
Based on the above findings, we can conclude that the issue of equality in an information society will not be solved by increasing the approach to the information. This study showed that even though the distribution of information hardware and software would be increased from introduction period to saturation period, there would be another inequality and eventually the digital divide would be increasingly magnified. Therefore, it is necessary to make efforts continuously to lesson the gap in information use and application in addition to solve the issue of access to information. Especially, in case of the elementary school students, as the index to predict the digital divide it is important for the government to interfere from the beginning to ease the gap.
