This thesis attempts to investigate the effects of a certain bibliotheraphy program on the self-esteem of elementary school students. On the theoretical premise that self-esteem can be divided into four factors, the following sub-questions were asked and inquired. (1) Does this bibliotheraphy program effect on the self-esteem of elementary school students? (2) Does this program effect on the factors of self-esteem of elementary students such as, general, social, in home and in schooling?
The subjects were 36 fourth-graders of one elementary school who have been sampled in Changwon city at random. The 36 subjects were divided into two groups: (ⅰ) the experiment group consisted of 18 fourth-graders(7 males and 11 females), (ⅱ) the control group, 18 graders(11 males and 7 females).
The tool for the measurement of SEI (Self-Esteem Inventory) was that of Jang En-young(2001) which edited and modified Chidren's SEI of Coopersmith(1967).
The bibliotheraphy program used the model of the 4th stage of Kim Chun-kyung(2003), Lee Ji-hyun(2005), Gu Hyeon-sook(2005) and was revised by the help of some professionals in the light of two points: (ⅰ) the experiment group of this study is not patients but average students, (ⅱ) the reading materials which were given to the experiment group are fitting to the cognitive level of the group. The program was operated three times a week and the duration of one time was fifty minutes. The total number of program operating was 15. The test of self-esteem was given to both experiment and control group before and after the program.
Frequencies, percentage, mean, and standard deviation were calculated. And t test and two-way ANOVA were mainly applied to the statistical analyses.
The findings of this thesis may be summarized as follows:
(1) This fitting reading program is effective on the promotion of self-esteem of elementary students.
(2) This fitting reading program is also effective on the promotion of the factors of self-esteem. This program has some positive effects on general and social self-esteem, self-esteem in home and in schooling of elementary students.
