The purposes of this study were to verify how internalization ideal beauty stereotype and objectified body consciousness by sociocultural pressure factors had an influence on body satisfaction and examine the relation between body satisfaction and appearance management behavior. To achieve the purposes, a questionnaire was conducted to 836 adults, whose ages were from 18 to 30. Data were analyzed by structure equation modeling of Amos 4.0 and SPSS 10.0 program.
The results of this study were summarized as follow:
First, there were significant differences in sociocultural pressure, objectified body consciousness, internalization ideal beauty stereotype, body satisfaction and appearance management behavior variables by gender. The results showed females more highly recognized sociocultural pressure, objectification and internalization ideal beauty stereotype and more positively pursued appearance management behavior than males. On the other hand, in respect of body satisfaction, males were more satisfied with their bodies those that of females. Also, even though males had lower average in all the variables except for body satisfaction than females, their recognition of objectified body consciousness, internalization ideal beauty stereotype was above the average. It meant that males were accepting beauty standard that society requires and recognize their body and appearance as an object to see themselves.
Second, sociocultural pressure factors such as, family, friends, media had a positive effect on objectification that people saw themselves with the view of a watcher to all female and male adults. When they had more intensive internalization to accept beauty standard as personal value, tendency of objectification got more increased. It meant that people objectified their body appearance by sociocultural pressure and when they internalized social beauty standards more and more, tendency of objectification got more serious.
Third, when females and males more highly recognized sociocultural pressure like family, friends and media, their satisfaction with body became lower. The result implied that sociocultural pressure, which delivered ideal appearance standard and lead people to follow the standard, was the strongest influential variable to bring out body dissatisfaction to male and female adults.
Finally, when females and males had high tendency of objectification and high body satisfaction, they affirmatively managed their appearance. This result made clear the result of preceding studies that body satisfaction was the variable to have an effect on appearance management behavior. Also, an objectification variable was very important one to have an influence on appearance management behavior of male and female adults with body satisfaction.
The significance of this study was to analyze in integrative aspects of the relation and effect of sociocultural pressure, internalization ideal beauty stereotype and objectification variable, which had an effect on female and males adults' body satisfaction and appearance management behavior. Moreover, this study found that not only females but males more strongly objectified body and appearance, when they highly realized sociocultural pressure for ideal appearance so that they would pursue appearance management behavior.
