The present study investigated the impact of social exclusion and inclusion on individuals' social information processing and subsequent behavior. A total of 90 Korean college students participated in a study that employed a 2(Social Exclusion/Social Inclusion) X 3(Internal Attribution/External Attribution/No Attribution) between subjects design. Based on previous research demonstrating selective memory for social information on the part of the excluded (Gardner, Pickett, & Brewer, 2000), the current research attempted to replicate the finding in Korean culture. Unlike the previous study, however, the present study contrasted two opposing viewpoints regarding how individuals process social information as a function of being excluded or included from others. In so doing, it was hypothesized that when the content of social information implicates high levels of sociality, then the included, not the excluded, would show selective memory for such information. Moreover, an interaction hypothesis was proposed such that the predicted main effect for social exclusion/inclusion would appear only in the external attribution condition. It was also hypothesized that the predicted main effect and interaction effect concerning social information processing would transfer to a subsequent behavior which involves punishing a target person for a wrongdoing in an interpersonal context. Main findings of the study are as follows: First, results indicated that selective memory for social information was more pronounced in the social inclusion condition than in the social exclusion condition. Second, the predicted interaction effect for social information processing was not found. However, consistent with the interaction hypothesis, participants assigned higher levels of punishment to the target person in the social inclusion than in the social exclusion condition when they had made an external attribution for such an experience. No difference was found in the other two attribution conditions. These results were interpreted in terms of an assimilative effect in social information processing. Implications of the study and suggestions for future studies are also discussed.
