The purpose of this study was to develop and to examine the effects of art therapy programs on children with maladaptive behaviors.
This research was conducted as a survey among 12 children aged 5 years old from H·O kindergartens located in Bucheon City. They were divided into two groups of 6 children each. The first group (here after referred to as "psychological factor children") showed maladaptive behaviors, which might be attributed to psychological factors such as anxiety, withdrawal, and dependence. The second group (here after referred to as "behavioral factor children") also showed maladaptive behaviors, which might be attributed to behavioral factors such as inattention, aggression and impulsiveness.
The art therapy program was developed based on the kindergartens'
annual program schedules and in accordance with children's emotional development level. The program consists of 6 stages, each of which is based on common emotional sub factors (encountering, social interaction, love, joy and happiness, calmness and freedom, appreciation and farewell). Children in each group were asked to participate in the program for about 2 months, 2 or 3 one hour sessions per week.
The measurement device used in this study is a "Scale of Children's Maladaptive Behaviors" for teachers, which was a self test designed for quantitative analysis. To obtain qualitative analysis, the study first analyzed children's drawings during participatory observation and art activities by using techniques such as KHTP (Kinetic House-Tree-Person) and KFD(Kinetic Family Drawing).
Results of this study can be described as follows.
First, all of the children who participated in the art therapy program showed significant reduction of maladaptive behaviors. The results showed that children from the test group exhibited increased reduction of maladaptive behaviors compared to those of the control group.
Second, the art therapy program is generally effective in reducing maladaptive behaviors. According to research conducted by Park Hyun Joo in 2005, such therapy was not effective on aggressive behavior. However, our test results showed that the program was indeed effective on anxiety and dependence, followed by withdrawal and including aggression. Park Hyun Joo's research should have included a comprehensive understanding of the children. Her research was limited to emotional development theory and thus, without considering emotional expression and usage of emotional behavior, was limited to recognition of emotion and control of emotion only. However, our research included all the factors, such as recognition of emotion and expression, control and usage of emotion all of which were included in a comprehensive view in order to correct the maladaptive behavior.
Overall, our research was therefore more effective.
Third, the art therapy program was effective in reducing maladaptive behaviors in the psychological factor children. Concerning sub factors of these behaviors, the program was more effective on anxiety and dependence, rather than withdrawal, inattention, impulsiveness and aggression.
Forth, the art therapy program was also effective in reducing maladaptive behaviors in behavioral factor children. Effects of the program were higher in relation to dependence than in relation to withdrawal, inattention, aggression, and impulsiveness.
Fifth, among the total 6 children who participated in the art therapy program (KHTP and KFD) and were then analyzed here, 4 showed significant changes, but the other 2 did not. Test results showed that the program had a positive effect in reduction of maladaptive behaviors. The two children named "Snow White" and "Turtle Ship" that had showed serious psychological maladaptation exhibited increased self confidence, ability of expression and self respect. The child named "Crayon" who had showed serious behavioral maladaption later exhibited significantly reduced aggression and his expression and creativity was enhanced. In addition, the child named "Rose" no longer exhibited inattention or impulsiveness and became stable. However, "Sleeping Princess" and "Chestnut" did not show any improvement of behavioral maladaptation. The test showed that these two might require more time and effort.
Test results show that art therapy is effective in reducing children's maladaptive behaviors. Through this therapy, children can recognize their emotions and express their feelings. They can recover their self confidence without anxiety and withdrawal.
Their ability to express and speak is enhanced and their tendency to depend on someone is significantly reduced. Their concentration has improved and their level of social interaction has increased, leading to a significant decrease in their aggressive behavior. In addition, their ability to control their emotions, and the impulsive behaviors were also reduced.
Therefore, the results of this study demonstrate that art therapy is indeed a good tool for children exhibiting maladaptive behaviors. And if children's educational organizations and institutions as well as nurturing homes, use this therapy in conjunction with other counseling techniques, it will maximize the effect in reducing maladaptive behaviors.
