The purpose of this study is to find out the relationship among parents' child-rearing attitudes perceived by children, self-regulation ability and conflict resolution strategies in children's friendship.
In order to solve the research problems, the following hypotheses were set up.
【Hypothesis 1】 There will be significantly correlations among parents' rearing attitudes, self regulation ability and conflict resolution strategies in children's friendship.
【Hypothesis 2】 Parents' rearing attitudes and self regulation ability will significantly affect conflict resolution strategies in children's friendship.
This study surveyed 257 school boys and 252 school girls, totally 509 who are 5th or 6th grade of elementary schools located in Seoul area to verify the above hypothesis.
The instrument used for this study were 「Scale on Friendship Conflict Resolution Strategy」(Bae Sung-young, 2000), 「Parents’ rearing attitude Questionnaire」(Im Shung-hwa, 1982), 「Self regulation ability Scale」(Huh Jung-kyung, 2004).
The data were analyzed by difference analysis, correlation analysis and regression analyzed using SPSS/WIN 12.0 program. All hypotheses were verified in the level of significant(p<.05).
The result of the research are summarized by hypothesis as follows;
First, there are partially significant correlations among parents' rearing attitudes, self regulation ability and conflict resolution strategies in children's friendship. Parents’ rearing attitudes are classified into affection vs hostility, self-control vs regulation, achievement vs non-achievement, rational vs irrational and the inferior factors of these attitudes are inter locked with the inferior factors of self regulation ability in the perception, motivation and action. Further, all the inferior factors of the parents’ attitudes are particularly related with the lower level of reconciliation and cooperation tactics of the conflict resolution strategies among friends. Parents’ attitude for achievement vs non-achievement is showing positive relationship with evasive skills and fathers’ self control vs regulation and rational vs irrational and all the inferior factors of mother’s attitude are revealing negative relationship with children’s ruling tactics.
Second, parents' rearing attitudes and self regulation ability have partially significant effect on conflict resolution strategies in children's friendship. The order of parents’ rearing attitudes and self regulation ability affecting the inferior factors of conflict resolution strategies is perception, motivation, fathers’ affection vs hostility, and they are significantly acting on the reconciliation and cooperation skills. Motivation has influence upon evasive tactics and relevant action factors and mothers’ rational vs irrational tendency give significantly negative effect on the evasive strategies.
This study provides overall understanding that children’s perception of the parents’ rearing attitudes and the children’s self regulation ability are the important influencing components on the conflict resolution strategies among friends. It is verified that the more positive the parents’ rearing attitude and the self regulation abilities are, the more sociable reconciliation and cooperation tactics are used for the conflict resolution strategies. When the more negative parents’ rearing attitudes and lower level of self regulation ability are found, more ruling and dominant actions are introduced to release the conflict among friends. Resultantly, children should be raised and educated by their parents in affectionate and embracing attitudes to support them to adjust to the social requirements and they should benefit from the school education properly reflecting and considering the children’s self regulation ability.
