(Abstract)
The purpose of this study is to understand the reality of mentoring activities from mentors who have mentoring experience on teenagers on probation and to suggest a proposal on ways to revitalize the mentoring.
To achieve this purpose, a textual study and a research were both used. The research was conducted on mentors with experience in mentoring activity on teenagers on probation from April 13, 2006 to 26th. Out of 80 questionnaires distributed, totally 75 of them were sued in the analysis. Using a statistical program, SPSS 12.0K, the collected data were analyzed according to frequency, percentage, t-test, and one-way ANOVA.
The results can be summarized as below. First, in the mentoring education and supervision, the satisfaction was high in mentoring education while that of supervision was low. People answered that the education program and training of supervision lacks real activities.
Second, in the individual program and group program, the research was conducted according to mentors'gender of whether or not the mentor-mentee shares the same gender by t-test. As a result, there was a more positive answers from those who shared the same gender. Also, more than half of the people answered that the appropriate period of mentoring activities is the same as the period of probation. This shows a divergence from the reality where the period of mentoring activities last one year.
Third, a research on the satisfaction about the institute was conducted to see the difficulties of carrying on the role of a mentor. Among the inquiry items, there was a high percentage of positive answers in 3 items. However, there was a low percentage of positive answers in financial support and remuneration of the institute. Through this result, it is evident that the financial support and remuneration is not appropriate although there is an appropriate cooperation and psychological support from the institute.
Last, about the effectiveness of mentoring activities, there was a high percentage of positive answers about changes in the mentees. I was able to recheck the effects of the existing mentoring programs. Although there was only a small difference between the mentors' sex on the effectiveness, it was more effective when the mentor-mentee were of the opposite sex.
Based on the research results, I'd like to make below proposals.
First, in order to vitalize the mentoring activities, there must be an education where the contents of mentoring and supervision can be used in the reality.
Second, the institute must consider appropriate financial support and remuneration.
Third, there is a necessity to lengthen the period of mentoring program considering the period of probation.
Forth, the effectiveness was high when the mentor and mentee shared the same sex. Thus, in order for a balance in the genders, an effort must be made to enhance the rate of participation of male mentors.
Fifth, there is a necessity for a legal and a systematic provisions regarding mentoring activities of teenagers on probation.
The advantages of the mentoring activities of teenagers on probation include creating an emotional relationship for a mentee's emotional tie and creating a broader system of support through mutual satisfaction. Also one can protect and guide the teenagers on probation as well as improving the teenagers'quality of life in the welfare perspective through the mentoring activities. If the mentoring activities which have many advantages are amended and supplemented, not only the future of teenagers but also that of the society will be bright.
