(Abstract)
The purpose of this study was to verify the effects of a REBT group counseling program on irrational beliefs, mathematics anxiety and mathematics efficacy of high school girl students. To achieve this purpose, REBT Group Counseling Program (Mi-Hyang Oh, Seong-Hwe Kim, 1987) was utilized. The subjects of the study were 30 girl students in their 2nd year at the S high school in Daegu. They were randomly assigned to one of the two groups, 15 to the experimental group and 15 to the no-treatment control group. The program for the experimental group was conducted a total of 10 times, twice a week, from December 16, 2005 to January 13, 2006. To verify the effects of the program, a pre-test and a post-test for the experimental group were carried out, and a follow-up test was conducted a month after the program. These tests were carried out with 3 scales measuring irrational beliefs, mathematics anxiety and mathematics efficacy. The SPSS 12.0 was used for data analysis, and Repeated Measures ANOVA was conducted to evaluate the effects of the program. Results showed that the REBT group counseling program decreased irrational beliefs, mathematics anxiety and increased mathematics efficacy. The effects of the program also remained relatively stable a month after the program. These results suggest that the REBT group counseling program is effective in decreasing irrational beliefs, mathematics anxiety and increasing mathematics efficacy.
