Recently, constantly-increasing home dismantle has been producing children-adolescents who are forced to live in other environments than home regardless of their own will.
In this point, this study shows that home dismantle itself can be huge threats to society and has negative effects on psychological and cognitive adaptation of group home children․adolescents, focusing on factors which affect adaptation of children․adolescents.
Also, this study aims at examming situations and problems about psychological, social and cognitive traits of group home children․adolescents by conducting surveys on demographic traits of them, and suggesting possible answers to these problems.
This study chooses as survey subjects 44 group home children, adolescents in seoul, gyeonggi-do belonging to Adolescent's Support Center and analyzes psychological adaptation ability by using likert scale. Also, this study carries out technological-statistics to test intelligence of group home children who are selected as 42 subjects with the exception of 2 persons over the age of 18.
Structural interview is used by visiting counselor of Adolescent's Support Center as a tool for surveying demographic traits of group home children․adolescents.
As measurement method for intelligence scale, Korean Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Ⅲ is used. To measure psychological․social traits, what Kim, Mun Ju translated self esteem questionnaire by Rosenberg(1965) into, and what Lee, Yu Jung translated Mood Survey developed by Underwood & Froming(1980) into are used. And items used in the study of children offensive by Dodge(1980), which Kwak, Keum Ju modified and what Lee, Myong Shin translated subjective living quality scale by Campbell(1981) into are in use as well.
This study uses SPSS 13.0 program to analyze collected data. The abstract of results is below.
Firstly, the result we have by viewing demographic traits of group home children adolescents is that more than half of children adolescents around the age of 8, who experienced home dismantle caused by financial troubles though their parents were alive, live apart from their parents.
This is affecting their school life, and making them experience being left out from their classmates. In addition, they find difficulties in adapting themselves to local community and family.
Also, the average age of children․adolescents having residence period under 1 year is higher than that of children․adolescents having residence period over 2 years, which implies that the age of children․adolescents who come into group home recently is getting higher.
Secondly, by examining psychological adaptation to self-esteem, mood, aggression, subjective living quality, we conclude that self-esteem, mood and subjective living quality of group home children․adolescents are characterized into the upper part. Also, their aggression shows mediocrity.
But they show big deviation between the top layer and the lowest layer of group regarding subjective living quality, which means there is big differences in their personal feeling about living quality.
Thirdly, the test on their cognitive characters indicates that their overall intelligence is categorized into an average.
Children․adolescents belonging to group having residence period under one year show lower IQ, which imply that group home life has negative effects on those who failed to be adapted.
In addition, children․adolescents having over an average of IQ show tendency to have high perception organization capability, but the lowest level of freedom from distractibility.
The point we should pay attention to is that 14.3% of all group members are below borderline of intelligence ability and 23.8% of them are below verbal IQ and 11.9% are below performance IQ. These results confirm that there exists very intensive deviation within the group.
On the basis of above results, this study suggests followings.
At first, children․adolescents need to be provided with high quality environments for higher living standard ,and proper individual counsel, treatment as well.
Secondly, we should offer programs suitable for their intelligence and desire level by evaluating their cognitive ability ,and consider inconclusive approaches which contribute to their future life.
