This study was conducted with the aim of promoting the qualitative enhancement in health of the elderly residing in facilities by testing efficacy of the reflexology foot massage therapy using aroma on the urinary cortisol, stress, sleep, gloom, blood pressure and pulse of the elderly residing in facilities. 26 for the experimental group and 25 for the control group were selected among the female elderly residing in elderly welfare facilities located in Daegu and meeting the subject and condition of the study. And then professional foot massagers performed a40-minute reflexology foot massage therapy using aroma on the experimental group two times a week for six weeks and the control group did a 10-minute reflexology foot massage therapy using aroma by themselves two times a week for six weeks, helping each other during the period October 31-December 10, 2005. Before the reflexology foot massage, the urinary cortisol, stress, sleep, gloom, blood pressure and pulse of both groups were measured, and thereafter, the same
examination was conducted. And then the difference in the results prior to and after the examination between the two groups was compared.
The urinary cortisol figures fell 0.62 and 0.53 on average in the experimental group and the control group, respectively, but there was no significant difference in the extent of changes between them. The stress score dropped 23.73 and 11.36 on average in the experimental group and the control group, respectively, showing a significant difference in the change between the two groups(p<0.01). As for the change in sleep, the average score of the experimental group and the control group declined 9.65 and 8.44, respectively, showing a significant difference between them when the change was compared (p<0.05).The score of gloom of the experimental group and the control posted a decline of 1.08 and 0.44 on average, respectively, representing a significant difference when the change was compared (p<0.01). The systolic blood pressure of the experimental group and the control group registered a drop of 14.73 mmHg and 9.20 mmHg on average and there was no significant difference when the change between them was compared. The diastolic blood pressure of the experimental group and the control group fell 15.58 mmHg and 7.20 mmHg, respectively, showing a significant difference between them (p<0.01).As for the change in pulses, the average number of pulses in the experimental group and the control group dropped 6.31 and 4.44, respectively, with no significant difference between them.
It was found from the above results that the reflexology foot massage therapy using aroma performed by professional massagers had more efficacy than the one done directly by the elderly residing in facilities on the stress, gloom and diastolic blood pressure. However, even in cases where the therapy was performed directly by the elderly in facilities, there appeared to be such efficacy. So it was necessary to apply this through conducting education for the elderly in facilities in the future.
