In our modern society where we pursue as many conveniences as possible, the mobile phone has become the preferred media of communication. Now it has become an apparent necessity for juveniles. The "now generation" consider mobile phones as a means to feel and find existence in their society. In this study, we will see how adverse the situation can be when juveniles use their mobile phones either as a stimulant or a peer-induced self-esteem tool.
The 672 Students who participated in this study were middle and high school students in Sosan, Chungnam province, including four middle schools and three high schools.
In this study, the data was processed using SPSS Win 12.0. Frequency and percentage were calculated to understand the general characteristics of the actual conditions of using mobile phones. Basic reliability of measurement was tested through the reliability test. The t-test will determine whether there are differences among addiction to mobile phones, family cohesion, and self-esteem according to the characteristic. Correlation and regression analysis were used to find relationships to mobile phone addiction, family cohesion, and self-esteem were carried out.
Here are five conclusions based on this study.
First, juveniles use mobile phones as a means of getting along with their friends as opposed to adults who use it for actual purpose. They use it for sending messages 87.1% of the time. They seem to have some troubles using it. Their culture of using it affects negative surrounding environment.
Second, addiction to mobile phones is higher among girls than boys. Academic high school students are more addicted to using mobile phones, students who use more money, students who are not getting along with their teacher, students who don't have enough time to talk with their parents are more addicted to using mobile phones.
Third, family cohesion is higher among girls than boys. The more high level of life of students, the faster the purchasing time, the more harmonious with their teachers and friends, the more talking they have with parents, the higher self esteem they have.
Fourth, the higher the socio-economic level of students, the higher the purchasing power, the more harmonious students are with their teacher and friends, the more talking they have with parents, the higher self-esteem they have.
Finally, if they have low self esteem, family cohesion, the use of mobile phones borderlines addiction. The more money they spend, the less harmonious they are. Girls, more than boys, are more addictive in their use of mobile phones.
