The purpose of this study was to examine the self-esteem of deaf- and-dumb university students and how they found professors to perceive the disabled. It's basically meant to help provide tailored welfare services to them during their college years and to improve their self-esteem. A pilot survey was conducted on 30 professors, and the subjects in this study were 43 deaf-mute university students.
The findings of the study were as follows:
The self-esteem of the deaf-and-dumb college students investigated was at an appropriate level, and there's little serous problems with it. This finding indicated that the deaf-mute college students who continued to study at college had a positive self-esteem.
As for their perception of professors' way of looking at the disabled, they found professors to take a favorable attitude toward the disabled in the course of interacting with them, but there was neither smooth interaction nor rapport between them. Their use of sign language might be the reason.
Concerning connections between their perception of professors' attitude toward the disabled and their self-esteem, those with better self-esteem had a higher opinion on the attitude of professors. This implied that their self-esteem was affected and bound up with their interaction with professors and their attitude toward the disabled. As the professors at Korea Nazarene University had a good understanding of disabled people in general, the deaf-mute students at that university had a positive self- esteem and led a good school life.
The findings of the study had the following implications about the self-esteem of dead-and-dumb college students and school social work for them:
First, the way universities look at the disabled should change, and students should be educated to have a correct understanding of them.
Second, information exchange should be facilitated as part of school welfare efforts for deaf-mute students.
Third, sign language interpreters should be employed as tutors to narrow the gap between professors and deaf-and-dumb students and boost their socializing, mutual understanding and mutual confidence.
