This study is to analyze the contents of education of Christian mission schools at the enlightened age in Korea on the basis of their founding spirits and educational goals. The schools include Baejae Hak-dang(1885), Ewha Hak-dang(1886), Kyoung-shin school(1886), Chung-shin women's school(1887), Young-Hwa women's school(1892), Soong-sil school(1897), Sam-il school(1903), soong-eui women's school(1903), Kye-sung school(1906), Shin-sung school(1906), Chang-shin school(1908). Especially, this study is focused on the athletic activities within and without the curriculum of the schools by examining the historical records and documents.
These are the conclusions of the research:
First, the Christian mission schools established since 1885 adopted the Western culture whose education was clothed with the democracy, humanitariannism, and liberalism. The schools emphasized the education for the whole man which was equipped with spirit, mind, and body through the new education . They endeavored to produce the competent persons who would contribute to the church and nation by practicing the truth of christianity as the cultivated persons of ability. With the educational goal to make 'better Koreans' they carried out the pioneer mission of introducing the Western educational system and new studies.
Second, having realized the important of the physical training as education the Christian schools of the flowering time selected the gymnastic exercises as a regular curriculum and they taught the modern gymnastic exercises such as play, gymnastic exercises without apparatus, and martial art. The establishment of gymnastic as a part of curriculum of the Christian mission schools in the flowering time signifies that the modern athletic activities began to take roots in korea.
Third, the Christian mission schools in the flowering time presented the new meaning of the whole person development through the extra-athletic activities without the curriculum. With the help of missionaries the schools accepted and practiced the various Western sports, which was the pioneer role for the development of school physical education in Korea
