ABSTRACT
A Study on The Life Rehabilitation Teachers' Attitude to the Disabled
Hyang-Sik Park
Department of Social Welfare
Graduate School of Public Administrstion
Chonbuk National University
This study was set to explore life rehabilitation teachers' attitude to the disabled, analyze their effect and provide implications to the welfare for the disabled. For this, this article composed a structured questionnaire paper using DFS(Disability Factor Scales) developed by Siller and translated by Lee, Jong Nam(1994)) and conducted a research targeted to 12 residential facilities for the disabled in Jeollabuk-do. Of the collected data, total 200 copies were gathered and 186 copies were analyzed. The data were processed by technical analysis, T-test, one-way dispersion analysis, correlational analysis using SPSS statistical package.
The research hypotheses are as follows.
First, how life rehabilitation teachers' attitude to the disabled is.
Second, if there is any difference in their attitude to the disabled by their demo-social feature, individual feature related contact, information and education, organizational feature related to their workplace setting.
Third, what is the factor influencing life rehabilitation teachers' attitude to the disabled.
The findings of this study are as follows.
First, life rehabilitation teachers' attitude to the disabled was not so high as average 3.24 on 5-point scale. The aspect showing lower score then average were distorted identification, inferred emotional disorder, restriction of undamaged other functions of sub-attitudes in scale, and that showing the lowest score was authoritative attitude. This result displays the tendency that life rehabilitation teachers should take the stand of not loving and enduring the disabled based on human equality and dignity, but as a healthy person.
Second, One-way ANOVA, T verification(t-test) indicated that life rehabilitation teachers with social work licenses have a more positive attitude. But there was no difference in their attitude whether they have had on the job educational training. This point means that education for life rehabilitation teachers should be conducted more systematically and on a long-term basis. On differences in organizational features, the longer the establishment period of the residential facilities they serve and the less the number of the disabled, the more positive their attitude to the disabled. These results seem to be due to many know-hows in proportion to the establishment period, and the appropriate mood of small scale facilities.
Third, individual features influencing each life rehabilitation teachers' attitude to the disabled were taking a course related to the disabled, social work license, service term, and organizational feature influenced sub-attitude with a lot of personnel and accommodated persons.
Finally, factors influencing life rehabilitation teachers' attitude to the disabled were age, service term of individual features, personnel number and accommodated person of organizational features. In other words, the lower life rehabilitation teachers' age, the longer their service term, the more the residential facilities personnel number, the less accommodated persons, then the more positive life rehabilitation teachers' attitude to the disabled.
This article clarified that diverse individual and organizational feature not found in antecedent study of social welfare service providers' attitude to the disabled influenced their attitude. Thus subsequent life rehabilitation teachers' attitude to the disabled will have to be enhanced reflecting specialized re-training for the disabled, the working environment and organizational feature of residential facilities.
