The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of horticultural activity on improvement of sociality and alleviation of stress. The study was conducted 4-6 grade pupils of an elementary school. The horticultural activity programs were executed at one week interval during 5 months. Measurement instruments of the study were sociality scale for elementary school pupils developed by Jung(1971) and stress scale for children by Han and Yoo(1995). Data were analyzed by Paired T-test and Cronbach` Alpha.
Findings of this study were as follows;
First, horticultural activity was found to have a significant impact on sociality than other group activities, resulting in the increase of independency(t=-3.35, p=0.000). But significant differences were not recognized in law-abiding spirit, cooperative spirit, and sociability.
Second, horticultural activities had a positive effect on alleviation of stress between fellow pupils(t=3.43, p=0.004) However, stresses by family members, by parent, by studies, and by school life were not significantly not affected.
Third, increasing and improving tendencies of independency and stress by friends, respectively, were appeared in science handcraft activity groups. But a statistical significance was not recognized.
Fourth, groups of character and Japanese seemed to have little or no effect on all fields examined in this experiment.
