The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between young children's social competence factors. The aimed to answer is two major questions. First, are there correlations between children, mother, teacher and the social competence of young children?
Second, what kind of the factors affect to the social competence of young children?
In this study is based upon the research on 158 children under the age 4, 5 (85 males / 73 females) from 3 educational institutions for infants located in Seoul.
Three instruments were used: First, the Social Competence Rating Scale for young children originally developed by Lee Hye-Won(2005).
Second, Parent Behavior Inventory(PBI): Mother Form was modified Kim Hee-Jin(2003) based on PBI originally developedby Tomas and Chess.
Third, the DAP beliefs of teachers were assessed with TBS(Teacher Beliefs Scale). TBS was translated, and modified by Lee Yeung-Suk and Kang Soon-Mi(2001) based on the Teacher Questionnaire(TQ): Teachers Beliefs Scale(TBS) developed by Hart, Burt, Charlesworth, Fleege, Ickes and Durland(1990).
Data analysis used in this study are Correlation Analysis and Multiple Regression.
The results of the study were as follows:
First, the analysis on the correlations between children's gender and age demonstrates that positive correlations exist between the two (r = .24, p<.01). There was not significant correlation of the mother behavior. But the analysis on the correlations of the maternal professional
status demonstrates that negative correlations exist between the two (r = -.20, p<.05). The analysis on the correlations between teacher beliefs and the social competence that positive correlations exist between the two(r = .46, p<.01).
Second, there was affected to the social competence of young children that is the teacher beliefs(Beta = .38).
