The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of elementary school children's optimistic explanatory style on subjective well-being. The subjects for this study were 162 students attending sixth grade of one elementary school. They were asked to complete a questionnaire assessing explanatory style (Children's Attributional Style Questionaire; CASQ), life satisfaction (The Korean version of Multidimensional Students' Life Satisfaction Scale; K-MSLSS), and global affect (Children's Positive Affect and Negative Affect Scale).
The results of this study were as follows:
First, The students who showed higher scores in optimistic explanatory style were statistically significantly higher in subjective well-being than the students who showed lower scores in optimistic explanatory style.
Second, female students scored statistically significantly higher than male students in negative affect.
Third, female students showed statistically significantly more optimistic explanatory style than male students. Especially, there was a significant difference in good event.
Fourth, there was no significant difference in three dimensions of explanatory style(locus, stability, and globality). But the result of this study also showed that female students had a tendency in stability and globality.
