This study investigated the relationship between a mother's acceptance of emotional expression and her children's social behavior. This was based on the mother's population sociological factors, the children's sex, age, birth order, their mother's educational background, age, and whether she is employed or not. Subjects for this study were kindergarteners aged four to six in Seoul and Kyung-gi province and their mothers.
In accordance with this study, I established study issues.
First, is a mother's acceptance of emotional expression different depending on mother's population sociological factors, - her children's sex, age, birth order, and the mother's educational background, age, and whether she is employed or not?
Second, is a child's social behavior different according to their mother's population sociological factors, - the child's sex, age, birth order, and their mother's educational background, age, and whether she is employed or not?
Third, how is a mother's acceptance of emotional expression related to her child's social behavior?
Two instruments were used for this study: Carolyn Saarni's Parent Attitude toward Children's Expressiveness Scale (PACES)(1990) to measure a mother's acceptance of emotional expression, and the Social Skills Rating system developed by Elliott and Gresham(1990) to measure a child's social behavior. This researcher revised the Korean version of PACES translated by Kim Soon-jung(2000) to fit Korean situations. Likewise, the Korean translation of Social Skills Rating System by Jung Young-sun(2004) was revised by this researcher. As the method of statistical analysis, frequency, percentage, t-verification, One-Way ANOVA and Pearson Product-Moment Correlation were used.
In the view of the results so far achieved, a mother's acceptance of emotional expression has difference depending on different emotional factors. The children's age, mother's age, and whether the mother is employed or not determines the mother's acceptance of emotional expression; however, the children's sex, birth order, and their mother's educational background doesn't affect the mother's acceptance of emotional expression. Secondly, a children's social behavior is different from their sex. It was shown that girls have more characteristics of cooperation/obedience, self-assertion, and self-control. Thirdly, in this statistics, there is a strong correlation between a mother's acceptance of emotional expression and her children's social behavior. In addition, among different factors of a mother's acceptance of emotional expression, happiness has a direct correlation with self-assertion and self-control among diverse factors of her children's social behavior.
