In this study, a paleomagnetic study on the three terrace sections distributed along the coast of the Young-il bay is carried out, and rock magnetic and environmental magnetic characteristics and magnetostratography of these sections are successfully identified. The geologic basement along the coast Young-il bay consists of the Pohang basin (North side), which is covered by Miocene marine deposits (mostly mudstone), and the Yangbuk Basin (South side) covered by Eocene-Miocene volcanic rock and terrestrial deposits. Along the coast of Young-il bay, the three sections with different geologic basement, i.e., Yonghan-ri, Masan-ri, Homigot (counterclockwise from north), are selected for the study. Total of 511 orientated specimens are obtained from three sections known as terrace deposits in Yonghan-ri and one section, developed on the second terrace, distributed over Masan-ri and Homigot. Each section is classified into detailed stratigraphy based on field observation, magnetic susceptibility and color spectrum, and, to identify environmental magnetic characteristics, natural remanent magnetization (NRM) measurement, alternating field (AF) demagnetization, and anhysteric/isothermal remanent magnetization (ARM/IRM) experiments are performed. From the study, the most credible evidence for age determination, the blake excursion event, which is a worldwide feature of the geomagnetic field, is discovered in the Masan-ri terrace deposit. From the discovery of the blake excursion event, the terrace deposits, +22m high from the mean sea level (MSL), distributed over the top of the terrace platform in Masan-ri, is turned out to be created at the early stage of MIS (Marine Isotope Stage) 5e, and comparing the study results to the loess layer in china, the upper and the lower limits are correspond to 117.1 ka B.P. and 111.8 ka B.P., respectively. If the terrace deposits of Masan-ri is well compared with the other terraces developed along the eastern coast, Masan-ri terrace deposits can be utilized as a key bed in determining ages of nearby terrace deposits, and the resulting magnetostratigraphy is believed to have a great contribution to the future research of Quaternary and neo-tectonics of the Korean peninsula and also to determine the age of the last movement of a capable fault. Also, the variations of an environmental magnetic characteristics of terrace deposits and the change of the earth magnetic field intensity obtained from this study show that the magnetostratigraphic and environmental magnetic mineral characteristics of the terrace deposits in three sections are different. These differences are analysed that the particles constituting the deposits had been supplied mostly from extremely limited nearby bedrocks. This analysis suggests that the classification of terrace deposits and comparison of the origin of deposits are possible via correlating the variations of various paleomagnetic factors of the terrace deposits along the eastern coast.
