This study explores the occupational perceptions and choices of female college students by examining how they deal with parents’ expectations about their occupation and how the characteristics of the university affect their occupational choices. This dissertation employs mixed methods. The main analytical tools draw from social psychology, structural perspectives on sexual division of labor, and feminist post-structuralist theories.
The first part is a quantitative-based study, focusing on how female college students perceive their future occupation. Using survey data collected in 2004 from 759 female undergraduate students in Seoul, this study found that the most important occupational motivations of female college students were economic independence and self-realization, while the greatest occupational values were interest and aptitude for the work, job security, and stability. Also, the more "traditional" the students’ gender role attitudes were, the more "negative" their perspectives of the labor market were, and the more important job security and stability were among their occupational values. Female students'' preference for occupational values was significantly different according to their major, the prestige of the university, and the parents'' socio-economic status.
The second part of the dissertation is a qualitative-based study, focusing on how female college students negotiate their occupational aspirations and change their aspirations based on parents’ influence and university-related factors. Twenty-two female college students from five universities were selected for in-depth interviews based on university characteristics such as gender composition, majors, and prestige, and individual characteristics such as socio-economic status. The research settings included two women only universities and three mixed gender universities. The findings indicated that female college students prefer “stable occupations” (favorable to women) so as to balance family and occupation and prevent discrimination against women in the labor market because the responsibility for household work and child care still falls to women and is a disadvantage in itself. In addition, the gender composition of a university affects female college students’ occupational preparation, and the prestige of a university affects the prospects for students of getting a good job. In particular, the career guidance system of a university causes a difference in occupational options.
In conclusion, female college students prefer choosing professional areas or becoming a government employee, occupations which have a high or middle prestige, and female- dominated areas. They select these occupations to earn a stable income and manage their dual responsibilities (family and occupation). Based on these research findings, this dissertation argues that the complex mechanisms of occupational perceptions and choices of female college students should be understood as a double process (the same barriers women confront in the labor market and different strategies according to their different positions).
