The purpose of this study is to identify the status of physical education (PE) facilities through classification of the middle school physical facilities by region and school, and also to find out middle school students' satisfaction of PE class to extend school PE facilities, improve PE class and more effectively operate the PE facilities and PE class that students can be satisfied with.
The study target was 16 PE teachers (1 per school) and 1018 middle school students (1 class by grade per school) in the middle schools located in Gyeongju City. A total of 984 questionnaire responses were adopted as effective samples except for 34 questionnaire responses, whose reliability was low and responses were insincere.
The findings obtained through the study method and data analyses mentioned above are as follows:
1. The status of PE arenas (track and field sports, gymnastics and dance) by area and by school showed securing ratio in order of teaching tools storage room, horizontal bar, straight track, sand field and dance room of the total securing ratio.
2. The status of PE arenas (individual and group sports) by area and by school showed securing ratio in order of basketball court, volleyball court, tennis court, soccer goal post, handball goal post, Ssirum field (boys) and table tennis court. Individual sports facilities were lower than group sports facilities.
3. The PE class satisfaction of middle school students by grade showed significant differences in terms of PE class and satisfaction on PE teacher.
4. The PE class satisfaction of middles school students, according to the total number of students, school type and indoor PE facilities, showed significant differences in the environment, class, effect and satisfaction on PE teacher, which are the sub-factors.
5. The PE class satisfaction of middle school students according to playground area, showed significantly higher differences in 1000㎡ or more compared to less than 1000㎡ in the environment and effect satisfaction in terms of playground area.
6. For the satisfaction of PE class according to the gender of the middle school students, female students showed significantly higher satisfaction than male students in the environment, class, effect and satisfaction on PE teacher. Significantly higher satisfaction in 200m track or more than less than 200m track was shown in the playground size, 100m or more of straight track than 100m or less in straight track, and non-city center than city center by area.
In conclusion, at least indoor facilities beyond simple indoor PE facilities should be secured and 200m or more of track and 100m straight track of facilities should be equipped with to enhance PE class satisfaction of the middle school students. Also, the size and area of playground should be decided and related PE facilities should be secured in proportion to the number of students and school type. To do so, we need to make an effort to extend school PE facilities and provide the students with more effective and beneficial PE class through the awareness changes of school authorities, PE teachers and parents.
