Traditional markets carry traditional culture and emotion. As a place where people gather, such a market gives jobs to badly-off merchants and the low-income bracket purchase products there.
External factors that depress traditional markets are as follows: the growth of large supermarket chains; changes in distribution structure and consumers' purchasing behaviors. On the other hand, internal factors are as follows: relatively small size; deterioration of market facilities; lack of managerial mind of the merchants.
The government has taken the problem seriously. Therefore, a special act for revitalizing traditional markets is now being considered(2004. 9. 3). I analyzed the current situation of Hayang market in Kyungsan and discovered its problems. Then, I would suggest a comprehensive solution to internal and external factors for its depression.
First of all, Hayang market needs reconstructing urgently. As the walls and facilities were built in 1950s the market can not actually compete against large supermarket chains. As an external factor, Hayang is a rural town in the suburb of Daegu. Therefore, it could raise its brand value by developing its rural amenity, activating events and growing restaurants of local cuisine.
We should not consider the revitalization of traditional market only from economic point of view. It is a national task which affects livelihoods of badly-off merchants. Therefore, further in-depth researches are required.
