As computer and communication technology progresses and especially by the expansion of the internet, the world has been smaller and smaller and formed a global village. As the global world stepped into a contemporaneous period, there became various life-styles diversified ways thinking, and they cultural and social diversification upon anytime has not been as fast as nowadays.
This also goes in fashion, too and when turning to the 20th
century, fashion has taken it's place as a culture and, also since Post-Modernism, pluralism and eclecticism had spread their branches. Therefore, pursuing diversification in contemporary fashion, beauty that compromise more than two different styles form a new beauty.
Therefore oriental chic which is a mixture of oriental and chic was formed.
There were a lot of preceding researches on oriental styles such were about Eastern and Western designers, fashion collections, design elements and so on but no such theme of oriental chic. Thus, this study have went through oriental chic which is rising as a new fashion trend.
The purpose of this study is as the follows.
1. Study the formative and aesthetic characteristics of oriental
style shown in modern fashion.
2. Study the formative and aesthetic characteristics of chic style shown in modern fashion.
3. Understand and define the meaning of oriental chic.
4. Study the formative and aesthetic characteristics of oriental
chic style shown in modern fashion.
The range of this study is fashion collections from 2000~2005
from Paris, Milan, New York and London which designs have oriental motives especially of Asia.
For a preceding research thesis, references of art, aesthetic,
philosophy, social studies and dress were covered and fashion show photos were selected in the internet site .
Therefore, the conclusion of this study can be summarized as follows.
1. The aesthetic characteristics of an oriental style is as follows.
First, for decorative characteristics; expansion, space, layered, sensual and symbolize. Second, for non-decorative characteristics; simplicity,
attired, plane, and unrestraint.
2. Chic which is implied in Beauty, and it aesthetic characteristics are nobility, refine, feminine, modern and harmonized.
3. Oriental and chic style both showed a tendency of simplicity during the 20th century. Influenced by Post-Modernism, The formative characteristics of those two styles combined and formed oriental chic.
4. 1) The formative characteristics of oriental chic is as follows.
First, straight lined silhouette or body conscious line.
Second, the colors are black white and gray with middle tone
colors or dark colors.
Third, the garments that are mostly shown is silk, siphon and other soft and refine garments.
Forth, most of the details were eliminated but marndarine collar, obi belt, nots, ribons, and any such details were selected.
2) The aesthetic characteristic of the oriental chic style is simplicity, nobility, moderation and compartment.
First, simplicity shows a straight line an with no other details to form pure shape. Also the colors were tone-in-tone or tone-on-tone.
Second, nobility has a cultivated and decent image and it
recognised when combining the western style especially its form and oriental elements. And also high quality garments were used.
Third, moderation means to eliminate most of the decorations that can be worn on the human body, and also the silhouette and the colors were simple and plane.
Forth, compartment shows the division among items such as
strong contrasts between color, hue and brightness. And put togetherthe simple and uncomplicated form with oriental details.
As a conclusion, oriental style which shows a tendency of
simplicity and modern, and also have a oriental characteristics at the
same time, seems to be referred as oriental chic.
