(사) 에뽀끄(Epoque)의 활동과 회화 성향 연구 = A Study on the Process of Activity and Pictorial Flow by Epoque, Inc., Modern Arts Association

국문 초록 (Abstract)

1964년에 창립되어 40여년의 맥을 이어온 에뽀끄회의 정체성을 확인하며 1960년대부터의 활동을 중점적으로 정리하고 회화성향을 살펴 그 특성과 미술사의 숨어있는 역사를 되짚어 보고자 한다.

Whenever people mentioned the problems of inflow and formation of modern arts in Korea, the topic not to fail to be appeared would be backgrounds of the times. As to the backgrounds of the times, it can be divided into the art historical backgrounds and general historical backgrounds. And, when we recognize the problems approaching to the art historical backgrounds, we can not help considering the inflow of arts as transplant of quantitative arts type while the japanized modern arts just flowed into Korea at second hand and in fragments only without the erection of Korean modern arts. As to the backgrounds of art history, people have gradually had the aesthetic experiences while they were emancipated from Japanese colonial rule. And then, people came to meet new switchover in the history of modern arts under the historicity like a war while they tried to progressive preparation for the situation of arts and linkage of art history.
Considering the modern arts in Korea as a meaning that the epochal event like the Korean War in 1950 gave us, it made a large stroke and formed the keynote of the Korean art history today. The keynote was just Informel painting movement that made the young writers' thinking system awoke. This movement was the first collective modern art movement in Korea that expressed the inside thinking system with the experiences like a feeling of mental futility and existentialistic void in the ruins of war as an expressional abstract art. From this historicity in arts, the Epoque, Inc. for the modern writers may be rooted in the Informel painting, too. This study is to confirm the identity of the Epoque, Inc. that has maintained for 40 years under the roots. And, this study is to investigate its mind and history in the art history, examining the process of activity under the flow of modern arts.
When the modern art in Gwangju city and chonnam, in particular Epoque, Inc. a modern art association, can be divided by the period, first of all, it found out the period of Informel or Abstract Expressionism, Monochrome in the Conceptual Art, Minimalism, Mono group(物派) from 1960s to the end of 1970s. And, there were Avant Garde and Modernism connoted a vant-garde experimentation as a change-over period from the late 1970s to the early 1990s. Also, we can consider the period from 1960s to date as spread of pluralism. Under these circumstances, this study is to investigate the process from the foundation of Epoque, Inc., a modern art association, to date, formative characteristics, and its flow. As Woo Jegil, a painter, published a paper, "A Study on the Abstract Art Movement by Painting Circles in Gwangju and Jeonnam", centered on the Epoque, Inc. from its foundation to 1980s, this study is to research its background and process in an extension line on a basis of a paper by Woo Jegil described before. And, it is to analyze the pictorial flow and characteristic by the period for Epoque, Inc., a modern art association, that has been rooted in the history of modern art for 40 years under the background of modern art in Gwangju-Jeonnam. Also, this study is to establish the identity of art history for Epoque, Inc. through the partial approach at the aesthetic and academic level. After all, the objectives of this study are to suggest the directions and historicity to which the modern art has to proceed in the limitation and specialty that the local culture has. Also, this study is to trace the art base in the Gwangju-Jeonnam that can be called as roots of Korean modern arts. And, this study is to improve the autogenic development of Namdo arts, arts of the southern provinces, and quality of local culture. Also, this researcher thinks that it is significant for inspiring the cognition of progressive culture.
