This study considered personal system and socio-environmental system factors related to conditional recipients' drinking problems from the viewpoint of the ecological system. For this purpose, the following questions were set: first, what factors are related to conditional recipients' drinking-related functions? Second, how are conditional recipients' problem drinking and what factors are related to the situation?
To answer these questions, a survey was conducted with conditional recipients who were participating in a self-support assistance center. Multi-variate regression and logistic regression were carried out in a total of 134 cases on the basis of the simultaneous input system using SPSS 11.5. The results can be summarized as follows:
As for factors of drinking-related functions,
First, when multiple-variate regression was carried out with only personal system factors inputted, the higher expectation for drinking effects, the more problems of drinking-related functions. Of sub-functions of drinking-related functions, expectation for drinking effects had the greatest influence on functions related to workplace, followed by those related to family and to the body. On the other hand, of expectation for drinking effects, negative expectation had more significant relations with drinking-related functions than positive one.
Second, when multiple-variate regression was carried out with only socio-environmental system factors inputted, the stronger familial health, the fewer functional problems related to drinking. Of sub-functions of drinking-related functions, familial functions had the greatest influence on functions related to family, followed by those related to workplace and to the body, which was not statistically significant.
Third, when both personal and socio-environmental system factors were inputted to identify determinants of conditional recipients' drinking-related functions, only familial functions showed significant relations. That is, the stronger familial functions, the weaker the issue of drinking-related functions. On the other hand, as for the sub-function of workplace-related function, a will for self-support was found to be a significant variable. On the other hand, the stronger familial functions and the more adamant the will for self-support, the fewer the problems of workplace related to drinking.
Next, as for the degree of problem drinking and the relevant factors,
First, There were a total of 31 problem drinkers, holding 23.1 percent. This is higher than the national mean (19.5%) estimated by Je (2000). It is therefore urgent to intervene in conditional recipients' problem drinking.
Second, when logistic regression was carried out with only personal system factors inputted, the higher expectation for drinking effects and the more serious the problems concerning mental health, the more possibility of becoming a problem drinker. In addition, of expectation for drinking effects, negative expectation was more significant than positive one.
Third, when logistic regression was carried out with only socio-environmental system inputted, the more generous drinking culture, the more possibility of becoming a problem drinker; the higher social support, the less possibility of becoming a problem drinker. This implies that it is necessary to reconstruct the generous drinking culture formed among conditional recipients and that a program is necessary to form a foundation of social support.
Fourth, when logistic regression was carried out with personal and socio-environmental system factors inputted at the same time, drinking culture showed the most significant relations, followed by social support and expectation for drinking effects. In other words, the more generous drinking culture, the more possibility of becoming a problem drinker; the higher social support, the less possibility of becoming a problem drinker; and the higher expectation for drinking effects, the more possibility of becoming a problem drinker.
To put the results together,
Of conditional recipients' drinking problems, the determinant of drinking-related functions was found to be a familial function while factors related to problem drinking included expectation for drinking effects, drinking culture, and social support. Of these, the determinant of problem drinking is drinking culture.
It was therefore confirmed that both personal and socio-environmental systems affected conditional recipients' drinking problems; on this ground, theoretical and practical grounds were presented to set an intervention plan from the viewpoint of ecological system in practicing social work.
