This research investigated the actual status of individual characteristics and peer bullying/victimization experienced by first graders of middle school boys and girls, how individual characteristics and peer bullying/victimization differ with respect to gender, how peer bullying/victimization differ in terms of individual characteristics, and how adolescents' individual characteristics affect subcategories of adolescents' peer bullying/victimization.
A sample of 291 middle school students in kwang-ju city was surveyed. Statics used for data analysis were frequencies, means, standard deviation, t-test, F-test, Pearson's correlation, Duncan test and stepwise multiple regression analysis.
The major findings of the research were as follows:
First, general trend of adolescents' individual characteristics and peer bullying/victimization showed that their means were under the medium score except for physical ability variable. Boys and girls perceived 'physical ability' as most important and that there were significant differences in the physical ability variable in terms of individual characteristics based on gender. The other side, bullying score was greater than victimization score and that the direct bullying was greater than relational bullying but direct victimization and relational victimization didn't have differences. There were significant differences in the total victimization, direct bullying, direct victimization in terms of peer bullying/victimization based on gender.
Second, effects of individual characteristic variables on the peer bullying /victimization were found significantly. Of individual characteristic variables that cognitive ability, behavioral characteristic(aggression, withdrawal) were significant differences in the direct and relational peer bullying/ victimization and that appearance, physical ability were significant differences in the direct peer bullying/victimization.
Third, there were results of the relative effect of individual characteristics on the peer bullying/victimization. Ahead bullying, in the boys case, aggression and direct victimization significantly affected perceptions of direct bullying, these variables accounted for 46 percent of direct bullying. And aggression only significantly affected perceptions of relational bullying, that this variable accounted for 22 percent of relational bullying. In the girls case, aggression significantly affected perceptions of direct and relational bullying, this variable respectively accounted for 38 percent and 29 percent of direct and relational bullying. Now for victimization, in the boys case, direct victimization was explained by the withdrawal, direct bullying, appearance. These variables accounted for 24 percent of direct victimization. And relational victimization was explained by the withdrawal, appearance, relational bullying. These variables accounted for 27 percent of relational victimization. In the girls case, withdrawal significantly affected perceptions of direct and relational victimization, this variable respectively accounted for 16 percent and 19 percent of direct and relational victimization.
In conclusion, aggression was the most significant factor affected the direct and relational bullying, while withdrawal was the main significant factor that affected the direct and relational victimization in boys and girls.
