At present, in Korea, majority of infants receives some types of education prior to elementary school, for parents perceive the importance of a bridging stage between preschool education and elementary education before formal schooling. However, the duration and the type of education for each infant vary so that each infant is likely to have different experience in education before entering a regular school. This research is to scrutinize if there are differences in academic achievement, learning attitude, and academic self-concept for the first graders, depending on educational experience, or background, undergone prior to a regular school.
Subjects were 199 first graders who had some forms of educational experiences before formal schooing. To observe differences in academic achievement depending on educational experience prior to regular school, the averages of Korean, math, Straight Life, Bright Life, and Happy Life from the final examination of 1st term and 2nd term were computed and exploited. To observe differences in academic self-concept and learning attitude, related questionnaires were established, and the survey was implemented. Moreover, letters that ask for cooperation from parents were sent out, and the survey was fulfilled. For verification on the research questions, ANOVA was employed for that purpose.
The conclusions derived form the dissussions on the result of this study are as follows:
1. There are differences among academic achievement of students, depending on the types of preschool education. Specifically, the type that combines kindergarten education and private institution education improve academic achievement of students most, next is kindergarten education, least effective one was private institution education.
2. There are differences among learning attitude of students, depending on the types of preschool education. Specifically, the type that combines kindergarten education and private institution education improve learning attitude of students most, next is kindergarten education, least effective one was private institution education.
3. There are differences among academic self-concept of students, depending on the types of preschool education. Specifically, the type that combines kindergarten education and private institution education improve academic self-concepte of students most. next is kindergarten education, least effective one was private institution education.
4. There are differences among academic achievement of students, depending on the duration of preschool education. Specifically, the duration of more than 2 years has the most remarkable effects in improving academic achievement of students, next is the duration of between 1 and 2 years, less than a year affects least.
5. There are differences among learning attitude of students, depending on the duration of preschool education. Specifically, the duration of more than 2 years has the most remarkable effects in improving learning attitude of students, next is the duration of between 1 and 2 years, less than a year affects least.
6. There are differences among academic self-concept of students, depending on the duration of preschool education. Specifically, the duration of more than 2 years has the most remarkable effects in improving academic self-concept of students, next is the duration of between 1 and 2 years, less than a year affects least.
