Existing on low rank constituent within large concept of Korea culture, Jeju culture had kept individuality continuously. Characteristic of mountain range that occurred by the mountains that erosion lifts consecutively in Korea Peninsula paper mold that is gone over long term appears. On the other hand, Jeju island has long distance for east and west in cone style laying stress on Mt. Halla among island as a volcano island that consist through Mt. Halla's volcano activity. Therefore, Korea Peninsula and Jeju Island villages show difference from the beginning in conditions of location. In Jeju Island, there are the seaside villages that has springwater and the jungsangan villages that has reservoir. This study try to find about nature and person's relationship in this area through concept called 'Jungsangan' that was not in Korea Peninsula. The villages in jungsangan area is an evidence that our ancestors tried to take a relationship with local nature.
The jungsangan villages of Jeju Island are sorted by relative position of the seaside village not in absolute numerical value or standard. Jeju Island people separate jungsangan villages and the seaside villages by 'Uttturu village (the upper village)' and 'Altturu village (the lower village)'. In this way, jungsangan villages are higher than the seaside villages in the sea level altitude, cultivate and engage stock farming. The jungsangan area is a range of these jungsangan villages. The most important problem that conditions of location in village was how to get the water in jungsangan area. The methods to get the water in jungsangan area are swamp, water pail and chamhang. Using swamp and water pail to get the water is a kind of public system, but using chamhang is a kind of individual thing.
In Jeju jungsangan village, there are a source of water supply in center of village and houses is arranged by it. The cultivated land is located outside of village and the stock farm is surrounding the cultivated land. However, method of getting the water shows difference between the east side of Jeju Island and the west side, it appears difference of village shape. The villages in the east side of Jeju Island had used the swamp, and the villages in the west side of Jeju Island had used the water pail. These difference make the villages in the east side grown like a line, and the villages in the west side grown like a circle.
There are direct factors and indirect factors that make the difference of the jungsangan village shape in the east side and the west side. The direct factors are rivers, geologicalㆍsoil characters and difference of using waters. Though rivers of Jeju Island is concentrated on the north side and the south side of Mt. Halla, the jungsangan villages in east side located by the river. Because the soil is so poor in moving to the east side than this area, it is difficult to get the water and the village is hard to be built up. And people in the villages in the west side used water pail and acquired the water, because water permeability of the west side was lower in geological and soil condition. Administration unit and distance of Jeju Island within the east and the west have an influence on the difference between the east side and the west side. Jungsangan villages in the east side of Jeju Island were built up by the swamp that formed naturally, it was limited to choose the village's location. On the other hand, jungsangan villages of Jeju Island in the west side make the water pail artificially and build up the village being depended on this water, so they chose the village's location optionally.
