Narrative are a rich source of information about a child' linguistic and pragmatic knowledge. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of the functional reading intervention of storybook on children with language delays in abilities of story production composed of story grammar, MLU per T-unit, cohesion.
In this study, 20 young children with language delays, 4 to 7 years of age, were selected. They were divided into two groups, experimental and control, by 10 subjects each. In the experimental groups, the subjects were trained by the functional reading intervention of storybook. The intervention was composed of 15 sessions scheduled 20minutes per session.
To test the effect of this experiment, pre and post test of story grammar, MLU per T-unit, frequency of cohesion use were used. The data collected were analyzed by ANCOVA utilizing pretest total scores of story grammar(setting, initiating events, internal responses, internal plans, attempts, direct consequences, reactions), MLU per T-unit, frequency of cohesion(reference, conjunction) use as covariates.
The results obtained in this study are as follow:
1. A significant difference was found between the experimental and the control group in total scores of story grammar.
2. In MLU per T-unit, a significant difference was found between the experimental and the control group.
3. A significant difference was found between the two groups in frequency of reference and conjunction use.
Based on the results mentioned above, it could be concluded that the functional reading intervention of storybook is an effective method of improving abilities of story production of children with language delays.
