A distance between countries is much narrowed by the world of the 21st century where they share, receive, and accept like their own ones cultures. Nowadays we hear all sorts of performance information through each medium of speech and enjoy performance culture according to our own tastes. It means that to that extent Korea has the culture recognized as important to the populace. Those not only in Korea but also in Asian zone are much interested in and love much Korean culture. On the one hand, a stage costume, hereupon, depends on the atmosphere of a drama or a performer, fulfilling its visually important function to the audience. As the special one including the two functions of special apparel within the category of fashion, that is, both expressive function and instrumental function, the costume provides another point of visual appreciation as well as providing perfection to a work.
Even though costume has been expressed and developed according to the styles of stages by the fields such as a play, an opera and a dance, thus, this thesis investigated and studied the costume design for performing Korean classical music considering that they took little interest in the stage costume for performing it.
The findings of this study are as follows.
A stage costume for playing the Gayagum could be divided into traditional one and modern one. Not only performing traditional classical music or Sanjo but also using an improved instrument with a upper register in modern times, together with various kinds of Gayagum, showed two classes of costume with a new musical composition suitable also to Western instruments, which motivated me to analyze the costume by dividing it into the two.
First, those playing the Gayagum preferred sleeveless design or a tight sleeve focusing on functionality in consideration of a wrist and an arm, the physical parts touching especially much the instrument.
Secondly, their silhouettes were variously shown according to their own tastes or physical characteristics. In particular, they preferred a broad design which prevented legs from being exposed and which did not bring about inconvenience even sitting down with a long skirt.
Thirdly, for fabric or subsidiary materials, I used mainly glossy material considering the lighting on the stage. It was clear that modern society used various materials by the development of synthetic material. For subsidiary materials, I used mainly beads responding strongly to light.
Fourthly, the color tones for traditional stage costume for playing the Gayagum included the ones used mainly in Hanbok(Korean traditional costume) such as a yellow jeogori(a Korean jacket) with a red skirt and white. Most of modern stage costume for playing it included black and white.
Fifthly, I produced a work by reflecting simple, Koreanish design. I produced as a work the design suffering nothing even in playing solo classical music or Sanjo or in playing a new piece by means of modernizing traditional stage costume.
Sixthly, I produced the work of a stage costume for playing the Gayagum in the form of a one-piece dress worn mainly at the time of playing a new piece solo because I preferred modern design of silhouette and detail that can now be suitable to fusion music.
Like it I could infer the aestheticality and functionality of the costume. I confirmed the usefulness and significance of the results from this study by designing and producing an actual work based on the findings and questionnaire survey as examined in the above.
I expect that this study will motivate the costume to be accurately recognized, variously expressed, and analyzed and studied in a multilateral aspect in consideration of promoting a little more the audience and performers on the stage for Korean classical music in the future.
