Dwelling site of Mumun Pottery Period in East-Southern area is taped into Ⅰa, Ⅰb, Ⅱa, Ⅱb, Ⅱc type. With analysis of the artifacts found from those graves identified that the grave changed from Ⅰa,Ⅰb→Ⅱa→Ⅱb→Ⅱc type. As time passed, the size of the site minimized and the numbers of stoves also decreased. Additionally the location of the stove pillar seemed standardized.
Interestingly, type Ⅰa and Ⅰb type are found in the whole area of the South Korea but in case of Ⅱa, Ⅱb, Ⅱc type are detected most likely in Pohang, Gyeongju, Ulsan and Yangsan areas. Particularly, the most developed one, Ⅱc type, is mainly found near the Taehwa River in Ulsan, so it is possible to say that Ⅱa, Ⅱb, Ⅱc type pit grave sites are able to be defined as ‘Ulsan Type Sites’. Ⅱa is proto-type and Ⅱb type can be developed-type while Ⅱc is patterned-type. In addition, ‘patterned-type’ is divided into three different type such as four pillar type, six pillar type and eight pillar type. Those particular type of dwelling sites in East southern area is caused by the blocking of the Taebaek Mountain Range and it is also attested by the artifacts found from the sites.
From the ‘Ulsan Type Dwelling Site’, we can find facilities such as ditches and waterways and even though the evidence is not clear enough but it seemed that there were banks as well. Those facilities can be identified as a drainage system.
Based on the evidence in the excavation, Ulsan Type Dwelling Sites seem to have three-pillar supported ceiling with wooden, herb and clay frame. The places are divided into three rooms such as working, sleeping and storage. According to the size of the sleeping place, we can guess that four-pillar type site can accommodate 3 people, six-pillar type for four to six people and eight-pillar for seven to nine people.
It is also possible to confirm that there were reconstruction proofs in ‘Ulsan Type Dwelling Site,’ which mainly enlarge the wall with two ways; one is for one-way direction and the other is both-way direction. It seemed that one-way direction enlargement is more recent and newer technology than the other. The purpose of the reconstruction can be understood as the increase size of family members. The time for the Ulsan Type Dwelling Sites seemed to reach The Middle Mumun Pottery Period. The Early Mumun Pottery Period is identified with the similar time with Ⅰa and Ⅰb type dwelling sites which coincide with American Indian conjunction houses.
These conjunction houses are very open and public sites for the kinship monogamy families that are, so called, household community. So it seemed that the family types of the early plain pottery period would not be so far different with the families in American Indians.
So the changes from the early to ‘Ulsan Type Dwelling Site’ may be explained that it was started with the community but finally detached from the community one monogamy type of family size. The reason for this change is, mainly, caused by the development of the economic unit from community to individual family members.
And those Ulsan types seemed to be developed from the big size dwellings in East southern region. Other areas except Ulsan has built up their Middle Mumun Pottery Period culture based on small part of The Early Mumun Pottery culture whereas East southern area still has succeeded strong influence from The Early Mumun Pottery culture.
