미국 대통령 부인의 의생활에 관한 연구 : 대통령 재임기간을 중심으로 = (A) Study of Analysis of Costumes of First Ladies in the United States

국문 초록 (Abstract)

미국 역대 대통령 부인 44명의 삶과 역사는 미국의 역사와 함께 시작되었으며, 특히 대통령 부인의 의생활은 시대적 배경이나 문화, 종교, 관습 및 그들의 역할에 의하여 변천하여 왔다.
대통령 부인들은 남편들이 미국 내에서 정치적으로 가장 높은 위치에 있기에 집중적인 조명을 받았으며, 국민들은 국가 건립 이래로 그들로부터 많은 영향을 받아 왔다.
미국 역대 대통령 부인의 의생활에 관한 연구는 미국 여성 복식의 변천 및 더 나아가 각 시대의 복식의 특징을 알 수 있게 하여 준다.
본 논문에서는 첫째, 미국 대통령 부인의 활동에 있어서 시대적 배경을 고찰하고 둘째, 대통령 부인의 생활과 역할에 대하여 고찰한 후 셋째, 대통령 부인의 복식과 시대복식을 비교하여 대통령 부인 복식의 실루엣, 네크라인, 슬리브, 헤어스타일의 변천과정 및 특징에 대하여 알아보았다.
첫째, 미국 대통령 부인의 활동에 있어서 시대적 배경을 고찰한 결과는 다음과 같다.
유럽인들이 미국 동부로 이주하여 정착 생활을 시작하면서 미국의 역사는 시작되었다.
18세기 초부터 유럽에서 정치적 자유를 갈망하는 청교도들과 경제적 이익을 얻으려는 사람들이 영국 등지에서 이주하기 시작하였고, 1775년에 시작된 미국의 독립혁명의 승리로 지금의 연합 주(States) 형태의 미국이 탄생되었다.
미국은 건국 초부터 북부와 남부가 정치·경제적 구조의 차이로 갈등을 빚게 되어 남북간의 전쟁을 초래하게 되었고, 전쟁의 결과로 노예제도의 폐지를 비롯한 현재의 정치체제를 구축하게 되었다.
18세기에는 농업국으로, 19세기에 들면서는 공업국으로 탈바꿈한 미국은 1920년대 새로운 산업이 출현하여 번영의 시대를 맞이하여 1925년에 절정을 맞이하지만 균형을 잃은 경제는 대공황을 초래하게 되었다.
대공황에서 벗어난 미국은 제2차 세계대전 후, 자유방임을 표방하던 외교정책을 적극적인 개입주의로 전환하게 되었으며, 세계흐름의 중심에 자리 잡게 되었다.
이러한 변화 속에서 여성들은 각 시대에 알맞은 역할을 담당하였고 점차적으로 사회로 진출하게 되었다. 국가를 건립하였던 국가건립시대(1775∼1830)에 혼란스러운 혁명은 과거에 남성에게 순종적이며, 남성 중심적으로 생활하던 여성들의 생활을 상당부분 변화시켰고 여성들에게 새로운 기회를 제공하였다. 특히, 대통령 부인은 여성들의 다양한 욕구를 대변하기에 이르렀다.
서부개척으로 인한 내전이 있던 남북전쟁시대(1830∼1865)는 여성들에게 교육의 기회가 확대되었으며, 서부로의 정치적인 확장은 여성들로 하여금 정치에 관여할 수 있는 참정권을 요구하게 하였다. 따라서 변혁의 시대 이후 여성들은 참정권을 얻게 되었으며, 여성들을 위한 여러 가지 법령에 대하여 국가에 요구하는 단계에 이르렀다.
현대에 와서 여성의 활동은 더욱 조직화 될 수 있었으며, 그중에서도 1966년 여성의 권리를 위해 일할 국립 여성위원회(NOW)를 발족한 것은 대단한 성과라 할 것이다.
이와 같은 여성의 사회적 활동의 핵심에는 대통령 부인이 있었으며, 대통령 부인은 이 외에도 다양한 역할을 수행하였는데, 대통령 부인으로서 모든 국민에게 선망의 대상이면서, 위치에 대한 영광과 특권은 물론 사회에 대한 봉사와 희생을 감수하는 역할을 지켜내야 하는 힘겨운 자리이다.
둘째, 대통령 부인의 생활과 역할에 대하여 살펴본 결과는 다음과 같다.
1. 정치적 동반자 역할
대통령의 정치적인 역량을 높여주기 위한 대통령 부인의 역할 정립 과정은 미국혁명과 함께 시작되었다. 제1대 대통령인 조지 워싱턴의 아내인 마샤 워싱턴은 혁명기간 동안 군대를 돕는 등 매우 적극적으로 활동하였으나, 정치적인 면에서는 일정거리를 유지하는 것으로 대통령 부인의 위치를 확립하였다. 반면 제2대 대통령 부인인 아비게일 아담스는 공적인 업무도 활발히 수행하여 후임 대통령 부인들 활동의 모델형을 구축시켜 놓았다.
후대의 대통령 부인들은 이 두 명의 대통령 부인의 역할을 합성, 확대하여 각각의 모습을 따르기도 하였다.
2. 외교활동 역할
국가건립 초기 대통령 부인은 외국국가 수반, 대사 및 외국 주요 인사들에 대한 안주인으로서 봉사하기 시작하였고, 20세기 후반부터는 외교의 의무까지 역할이 확대되었다. 행정부의 외교정책을 개선하는데 있어서 대통령을 돕거나 종종 외교관으로서 활동을 넓혀 공식적으로 강력한 영향력을 행사하기도 하였다.
3. 사회활동 역할
19세기 여성들이 사회운동에 직접 참여하기 시작하였을 무렵, 대통령 부인도 적극적으로 지역을 개선하고 가난하고 힘없는 사람들을 위하여 봉사하는 일을 하여왔다. 사회개혁을 위하여 노력하는 대통령 부인들의 모범은 여성 리더십의 한 모델로 제시되었고, 이에 여성들을 움직이게 하는 동기가 되기도 하였다. 이러한 사회활동은 여성문제와 더불어 건강, 아동, 환경 등까지 확대시켜 나아갔다.
4. 선거운동 참여
20세기 초 많은 여성단체들은 이 시대 정치의 속성을 파악하였고, 이를 통해 미국 여성들은 완전히 정치권에 진입할 수 있었다. 오늘날은 대통령 후보의 부인이 추진하는 활발한 선거운동은 미국 정치생활의 일부가 되어 여러 가지 방법으로 응용되어진다.
결과적으로 대통령 부인들은 다양한 역할을 수행하기 위하여 자신의 이미지를 형성하는데 매우 적극적으로 대처하였으며, 특히 대통령 부인들은 이미지 형성에 패션을 적절히 활용하였기 때문에 그들의 패션은 대중의 관심이 되었다.
셋째, 대통령 부인의 복식과 시대복식을 근세, 근대, 현대로 나누어 살펴보고, 각 시대의 복식을 실루엣, 네크라인, 슬리브, 헤어스타일로 나누어 고찰한 결과는 다음과 같다.
1. 근세 로코코 스타일 시대의 대통령 부인의 복식은 풍성한 스커트와 꼭맞는 바디가 웨이스트에서 연결되어 아워글래스 실루엣을 이룬다. U자형이나 V자형으로 깊게 파인 목둘레는 핏슈 장식을 하거나 레이스로 장식하였다. 팔꿈치 정도 길이의 소매는 단에 한 겹 또는 여러 겹의 레이스가 장식되었다. 이 시대에 매우 과장되었던 헤어스타일과는 달리 매우 수수한 형태를 보이고 있다. 란제리 캡을 쓰고 있는 모습을 일반적으로 볼 수 있으며, 캡은 리본과 레이스로 장식되어 있음을 알 수 있다.
2. 근대 엠파이어 스타일 시대의 대통령 부인의 복식은 웨이스트라인이 가슴 밑까지 올라간이 웨이스트이고 스커트는 자연스런 슬림형을 이룬다. 가슴이 노출된 네크라인은 U자형이거나 사각형이었고 넓은 레이스칼라나 여러 겹의 레이스를 주름잡은 칼라형태가 달려 있었다. 짧은 길이의 소매를 많이 볼 수 있으며 다른 시대와 달리 이중으로 된 소매형태를 볼 수 있다. 이 시대에는 챙이 넓은 본넷형의 모자에 깃털과 리본장식에 베일을 달기도 하였으나 대통령 부인들은 대체로 컬이 진 머리를 부분적으로 늘어뜨리고 머리를 뒤로 빗어 올린 형태를 하고 있으며, 모자도 작은 형태를 애용한 것으로 보인다.
로맨틱 스타일 시대의 대통령 부인의 복식은 X자형 실루엣을 이룬다. 드롭숄더에 매우 짧은 소매가 달려있다. 시대적 특징이 대통령 부인의 헤어스타일에도 잘 나타나 있다. 이 시대에는 쏘시지 컬이 유행하였고 머리를 타래 틀어 올리기도 하였다고 한다.
크리놀린 스타일 시대의 대통령 부인의 복식은 크리놀린의 착용으로 피라미드형이나 돔형의 실루엣이 주를 이루었으며, 네크라인은 목둘레에 꼭맞는 형태로 스커트와 대조를 보였다. 벨슬리브, 파고다슬리브 등 소매부리가 넓은 형태가 유행하였으며, 매우 짧은 소매 형태도 볼 수 있다. 대통령 부인의 헤어스타일은 가운데 가르마를 한 머리를 트위스트 시켜서 후두부에 붙인 형을 많이 하였다.
버슬 및 S자형 스타일 시대의 대통령 부인의 복식은 트레인이 길게 늘어진 모습이 시대복식과 매우 흡사한 실루엣을 이루지만 디테일이 간소화되었으며, 극도로 과장된 실루엣은 살펴볼 수가 없었다. 초기 버슬 형태에서는 깊은 V자형이나 U자형의 네크라인을 볼 수 있으며, 네크라인에는 레이스 장식이 되어있다. 점차적으로 하이네크라인으로 변하거나 크라바트를 하였고, 이 시대에는 초커형 액세서리가 유행하였다. 헤어스타일은 크리놀린 시대보다 매우 자연스러워졌으며, 깃털 장식 또한 그 시대의 유행을 따른 것으로 해석할 수 있다.
3. 현대복식은 크게 제2차 세계대전 이전과 이후로 나누어 살펴보았다.
제2차 세계대전 이전 스타일 시대의 대통령 부인의 복식은 리듬감이 느껴지는 직선적인 실루엣의 복식이 주를 이루었으며, 다양한 슬리브 형태가 있었다. 특히 주목할 점은 이전에는 볼 수 없었던 언바란스한 슬리브 형태를 볼 수 있는 것이다. 네크라인은 의복의 형태만큼 다양해져서 깊게 파인 네크라인부터 목을 감싸는 하이네크까지 개인적인 취향이나 의복 착용의 용도에 따라 매우 다양한 형태를 볼 수 있다.
제2차 세계대전 이후 스타일 시대의 대통령 부인의 복식은 전쟁으로 많은 유럽 디자이너들이 미국으로 망명하여 뉴욕에 그들의 의상실을 열었고 미국은 일시적으로 패션의 중심지가 되었으며, 그들 중 다수의 디자이너들이 대통령 부인의 취임식 복식을 디자인하여 대통령 부인의 복식이 독자적인 영역을 굳힐 수 있도록 하는데 큰 역할을 하였다.
특히 대통령 부인 복식에서만 살펴볼 수 있는 취임식 행사를 위한 복식은 우아함과 여성미가 강조되도록 디자인되어 현대복식의 용도별 착용이 뚜렷해졌음을 반영하여 준다. 또한 대통령 부인의 복식이 유명디자이너와 이미 알려진 의류 명품점에서의 대통령 부인의 의류 제작과 필수적인 연관관계를 갖고 있다. 이는 패션디자이너 및 명품점이 유행을 창조하는 역할을 담당할 뿐 아니라 취임식 의상을 제작하는데 매우 중요한 역할을 담당하고 있음을 보여주는 결과이다.
지금까지 살펴본 대통령 부인 복식의 특징을 실루엣, 네크라인, 슬리브, 헤어스타일로 세분하여 비교한 결과는 다음과 같다.
실루엣은 시대복식과 대통령 부인 복식이 제2차 세계대전 이전까지는 똑같은 실루엣을 나타내고 있지만 장식적인 면에서 절제되어 간결한 실루엣을 보이고 있음을 알 수 있다. 반면 제2차 세계대전 이후의 실루엣은 대통령 부인의 취임식 의상에서 보듯 독립적인 성향을 구축하여 시대복식과는 차이를 보인다.
네크라인은 근세와 근대 복식에서는 시대복식에 비해 대통령 부인의 복식은 네크라인에 지나친 장식이 없이 심플한 형태를 보이고 있으나, 현대 대통령 부인의 복식에 보이는 스타일은 시대복식에 비해 화려한 형태를 나타내기도 한다. 이는 대통령 부인의 복식 중에는 취임식 등에 착용하였던 것을 비롯하여 대통령 부인의 역할이 일반인들과는 다르므로 이에 알맞은 의복을 착용하였기에 이와 같은 결과가 나왔다고 사료된다.
슬리브 형태는 로코코 시대에는 시대복식에 비해 대통령 부인 복식의 슬리브는 장식이 매우 절제되어 있는 반면 근대 이후의 복식에서는 시대복식과 대통령 부인 복식을 비교하자면 소매의 형태가 디테일적인 측면에서 매우 유사한 것을 알 수 있다. 현대 복식에서는 네크라인과 마찬가지로 시대복식에 영향을 받았다기보다는 대통령 부인의 복식이 독자적인 영역으로 자리매김하고 있음을 알 수 있다.
헤어스타일은 대통령 부인들이 그 시대의 화려한 헤어스타일보다는 수수한 헤어스타일을 선호한 것으로 보인다. 특히 로코코시대의 대통령 부인들 초상화에서는 그 시대에 유행하였던 란제리 캡을 쓰고 있는 모습을 많이 볼 수 있었는데 이는 초창기 미국으로 이주해 온 사람들의 대부분이 청교도인 이었으므로 종교적인 영향도 있을 것으로 보인다.
근대와 현대의 대통령 부인들의 헤어스타일도 과장되거나 장식적이기 보다는 우아하고 여성스러운 스타일로 대외적인 대통령 부인의 역할에 어울리도록 각자의 이미지를 관리한 것으로 해석할 수 있다.
이상에서 살펴본 바와 같이 대통령 부인의 복식은 제2차 세계대전 이전까지는 시대복식과 매우 흡사한 특징을 가지고 있다. 그러나 제2차 세계대전 이후부터는 시대의 유행과는 차이가 있음을 알 수 있다.
이러한 경향은 크게 두 가지로 그 요인을 찾아볼 수 있는데 그 첫째는 모드의 중심이 젊은 층으로 옮겨가면서 대부분의 대통령 부인 연령이 패션을 리드하는 연령대와는 차이가 있다는 것이고, 둘째는 대통령 부인의 역할은 일반여성과는 매우 다른 성격을 가지고 있기 때문으로 해석할 수 있다. 이것은 의복으로 하여금 의례를 위한 정성과 심리적인 자세를 과시함과 동시에 특정한 역할의 중요성을 전단할 수 있음을 알 수 있게 하여주는 결과라 할 것이다. 대통령 부인의 복식은 시대복식을 따르기보다는 대통령 부인의 역할을 수행하기에 적절한 의상을 착용한 것을 알 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In this paper, first, we looked over the history of females activities and American history and second, we considered first ladies lives and roles, and third, we reviewed changing trends and characteristics of silhouette, neckline, sleeve of first ladies costumes and hair style with comparing the first ladies costumes with public ones in that era.
First, we found out as follow after reviewing American history and females activities: The American history began as immigrants from the England and the other countries in Europe settled in the east of States and from the early foundation of nation, deadly conflicts between south and north by the different political and economical structures resulted in the Civil War and abolition of slavery as the product of civil war and they were able to establish the current political system.
Females played the roles suitable for each era in the course of changes and began to expand their acting stage to the society. The confused revolution in the era of national foundation considerably changed the lives of females who used to subdued to the men and provided women with new opportunities, and especially, first ladies had to represent variety of demands of women.
During the civil war caused by the exploit in the West, women began to ask for political rights allowing the participation into the politics and numbers of institutions to their nation followed by the increased opportunity of education for the women. First ladies placed in the center of females' social activities played the variety of roles.
Second, after reviewing first ladies' roles and lives, we found out the following: First, role of political partner. Martha Washington who was wife of 1st president, George Washington, established her roles as the first lady by maintaining some distance, and Abigail Adams who was wife of 2nd president established the model succeeding first ladies could follow by actively playing the public duties. Second, the role of diplomatic activities. First ladies at the time of early national foundation began to serve as hostess for presidents, ambassadors and important people from other countries and expanded their roles up to the diplomatic field from the late of 20 century. Third, the role of social activities. When women's roles as the advocator for the social movements began to be important in 19 century, first ladies played active roles such as improvement of society and pleading for the poor and powerless people, and these social activities were extended to the matters of health, children and environments without being limited to the matter of women.
Forth, participation of election campaign. Currently, active election campaign leaded by first ladies became of a part of political lives in the United States and there were variety of forms, and first ladies appropriately utilized fashion for their image so, their fashion was widely focused in the public.
Third, after looking over the first ladies' costumes and public one, we found out the following:
1. Modern Costume (Rococo Costume)
Rococo costume was the dashing decoration, and bulk of skirt were enlarged and it's bodies made the close-fitting hour glass silhouette, and bust was exposed for the low-cut neckline and it was decorated with lace or ribbon. Curled hair was decorated with ribbon or flower. For costumes of first ladies, we saw the dress with similar silhouette and hour glass silhouette was made with abundant skirt and tight bodies connected in the section of waist. Low-cut in the form of U or V around the neck was decorated with fichu or lace. The end of sleeve was decorated with single or several layers of laces, and the cap showed simple form that was something different from the exaggerated hair style in that era. We simply saw the people wearing the lingerie cap, and cap was decorated with ribbon and laces.
2. Modern Costume
The costume in the era of empire style made the bust seen plump by decorating the waist with ribbon as the high waist and straight silhouette. Four angled neck line and wearing necklaces were popular, and some of their curled hairs were trailed and remaining hairs were in a bun..
First ladies' dresses were high waist with the waist line up to the bottom of bust and their skirts made natural slim type. The neckline which was exposed to the extent that bust was seen was U or square type, and there were collar types such as wide lace collar and collar with several layered laces crimpled. Short sleeve was commonly seen and double sleeve type which was not seen in the other era was seen too. Characteristics of first ladies' hair styles were some of curled hairs were trailed and remaining hairs were in a bun. The costume in the era of romantic style was puffed to let the shoulder look wider and skirt made X type silhouette through treatment of gather, and the peaked bonnet was decorated with ribbon. Characteristic of first ladies' costume was the neckline which was almost straight made X type silhouette that was antithetical to the abundant skirt by emphasizing the shoulder, and sausage curl or the hair style that was in a bun were popular at this era and characteristics of the era were well reflected in first ladies' hair style.
The characteristics of costume in the era of crinoline style was the skirt made bigger than the one in the other era by the crinoline that was a kind of underskirt and the skirt made bell type and pyramid type silhouette as per the shape of crinoline. The neckline tightly fitted to the neck was appeared and straight type neckline to let the shoulder seen was still popular, and cap type small hat and broadbrim were worn.
Tight body matched with bell type skirt made pyramid silhouette was commonly worn by first ladies and neckline was tightly fitted to the neck, and wide sleeve such as bell sleeve and pagoda sleeve was popular and short type sleeve was also seen. The style of letting the curl down was popular, but first ladies' hair styles were simpler than the popular one in that era and their hairs were parted in the center with it's end up on the occiput.
As crinoline was disappeared, bustle silhouette that emphasized hip by lifting up the droopy skirt was appeared and changed to S type silhouette emphasizing the hip and bust for the effect of art nouveau. Standing collar was appeared and Choco type decoration was popular. Sleeve of bustle dress was seven-length one and end of it was decorated with lace, and the sleeve was getting changed to the gigot type, and the simple sleeve which was very similar to the modern one was appeared at the end of 19 century. They wore small felt hat or straw hat on their naturally waved hair with inclined toward forehead, and hats were decorated with ribbon or panache.
Detail of first ladies' costume was simplified and extremely exaggerated silhouette was not seen any more, and the deep V or U type neckline was seen in the early bustle type and decorated with lace. Gradually, neckline was getting changed to the high one and Choco type accessory was popular in this era and hair style was getting more natural than the one in the era of crinoline and panache was considered to follow the fashion of that era.
3. Contemporary Costume
Contemporary costume was reviewed with largely dividing into two phases such as post and prior to World War II. Female costume was getting modernized in earnest prior to World War II and music was reflected to the costume through the generation of jazz so, costume was designed to allow straight silhouette as a whole to express the delicate beauty of female and functional. While type of wrapping neck was popular at the end of 19 century, the type of exposing the neck naturally was popular at early 20 century, and short hair influenced by the boyish style was popular and callotte hat firmly fitted to the head was popular in 1930s.
First ladies' costume was getting shorter than the previous one, but classical atmosphere still remains in their costumes. While neckline was decorated with lace or braid until modern time, the contemporary neckline are variety in terms of shape, and simple U and V or square type without any special decoration are appeared.
Most characteristic things after World War II were new look of diol became of the moment for appearance of variety of silhouette and then variety of silhouettes suitable for personal interest and role rather than specific mode were getting appeared according to social stream emphasizing the personality.
In the latter 20 century, jacket with collar which seemed to be the style for men and reflecting the females' social participation was common and the other styled various necklines existed. Model or movie star's hair style was popular for the movie industry developed after 1920s, but the hair style of marked individuality was popular after 1980s. The silhouette of first ladies' costume was changed diversely and type of sleeve were diversified, and the thing we should consider specially was the appearance of silhouette which did not exist in the past and unbalanced sleeve type and also, neckline was diversified from the deep set one to the high neck wrapping the neck as per the purpose of costume and personal interests as the diversified costumes.
In first ladies, Jackline Kennedy considerably influenced the fashion made Jacky look, and Mammee Eisenhower made short hair covering the forehead popular and Barbara bush made pearl necklace popular.
As previously reviewed, the first ladies' costumes have the characteristics of similarity to the one at the era until prior to World War II, but their costumes were something different from the contemporary fashion post World War II.
