This study came to be driven aiming to extend children's language ability and self-concepts through devising an integrative approach program by proper poetry at the stage of a kindergarten, analyzing curriculum and references, and through activities that express variously, by collecting and manufacturing materials according to that program, based on the judgment that the poetry can be offered as basic data that express children's feeling and thought in forming children's language ability and self-concepts like this, under the recognition that the self-concepts, which are formed during the childhood, together with language ability that was experienced during the childhood, are an important tool that allows becoming a member of society. To achieve this goal, the research subjects were established as follows.
First, which influence do the various extended poetry activities have on children's language ability?
Second, which influence do the various extended poetry activities have on children's self-concept development?
With a view to this, in terms of the research targets of this study, it carried out the sameness test as to age, language ability and self-concepts between experimental group and comparative group before dealing with a test. a target of this study is allocated 20 persons for the experimental group and 20 persons for the comparative group that comprise 40 children who is 5 full years old. They are go to kindergarten as an annex to N elementary school and S elementary school where are located in Jangheung-gun, Jeollanam-do, and could regard it as the same group because there was no significant difference between groups through this.
Aiming to measure which effects the various extended poetry activities have on children's language ability and self-concept development, it measured children's language ability by selecting items such as 'common sense,' 'understanding,' 'vocabulary,' commonality,' and 'sentence' among sub-spheres of the linguistic-implication test from K-WPPSI (Korean Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence) translated by Park Hye-ju, Gwak Geum-ju, and Park Gwang-bae(1996), first in relation to a measurement tool of children's language ability, and it measured by selecting items such as 'cognitive,' 'social,' 'emotional,' and 'physical' through using a measurement tool developed from "A study on the effects of children's self-concept test tool and program" by Lee Hyeon-gyeong(2004), in relation to a measurement tool of a self-concept test.
Dealing with a test was carried out totally 12 times with twice per week for six weeks, and in terms of the collected data, it carried out t-test, compared and analyzed for the purpose of examining the difference between experimental group and the comparative group and the difference depending on gender and age, by using SPSSWIN 10.0.
Given summarizing results that were obtained through this, those are as follows.
First, the experimental group, in which the various extended poetry activities were carried out, showed significantly high language ability compared to the comparative group, and through this, it could be seen that children's language ability of the experimental group was enhanced through the various extended poetry activities. Here wasn't shown the difference depending on gender and age.
Second, the experimental group, in which the various extended poetry activities were carried out, showed significantly high self-concepts compared to the comparative group, and through this, it could be seen that children's self-concepts of the experimental group were enhanced. Here wasn't shown the difference depending on gender and age.
Consequently, it could be known that children's language ability and self-concepts were improved through the various extended poetry activities.
It is a real situation that the poetry activities by a preschool-education agency are currently conducting monolithic recitation and poetry memorizing as one course of a lesson, rather than presenting poetry, considering children's interest. Accordingly, through this study, given utilizing proper poetry suitable for children and offering various activities related to poetry so that children can come up with the various extended poetry activities, it is judged that children can enhance language ability and self-concepts by understanding poetry, bringing out their own emotional world, and fully expressing feeling and thought, and in order to this, the deep interest of a preschool-education agency and a teacher may be said to be needed.
