The purpose of this study was to determine what kinds of influence art cooperation activities has young children's prosocial behavior and picture expression ability. implication of this study the basic materials for educational application and effective guidance with art cooperation activities at childhood education centers.
The research questions that are considered in this study are as follows;
1. What kind of influence will be caused on young children's prosocial behavior through art cooperation activities?
2. What kind of influence will be caused on young children's picture expression ability through art cooperation activities?
The subjects of this study were 4 to 5 year old children enrolled in "K" kindergarten in Kwangju. They were organized into 2 groups the experiment group and comparison group with 20 infants assigned to each group.
The experiment group performed the art cooperation work twice a week (Monday and Wednesday) from May 31 to July 9, 2004 for a total of 12 times over 6 weeks. The comparison group performed the individual art activity twice a week (Tuesday and Thursday) over the same for a total of 12 times over 6 weeks period of time. For this research, the examination tools used to measure the children's prosocial behavior was the "Prosocial Behavior Assessment" produced by Kim, Young Ok (2003). In addition, the "Picture Expression Ability Assessment Scale" produced by Ji, Sung Ae (2001) was employed to measure the picture expression ability of the children. After observing each infant for 20 minutes prosocial behavior was rated. Picture expression ability was evaluated during the art activity time. In order to determine the effect on children's prosocial behavior and picture expression ability, a t-test was performed between groups by using the SPSS statistics program. The date was compiled and analyzed.
A summary of the results is as follows:
First, the experiment group that participated in art experienced a greate increase in prosocial behavior than the comparison group.
Second, in "leading attention" among the lower elements of prosocial behavior, the experiment group reflected a greater increase than the comparison group. However, among the lower elements of prosocial behavior, in "leadership," "giving help," "mutual understanding ability," "access communication attempt," "sharing," and "emotional introduction and control," the increases were seen both the experiment group and comparison group, but there were no significant differences between the two.
Third, the experiment group that participated in art cooperation experienced a greater increase in picture expression ability than the comparison group.
Fourth, among the lower elements of the picture expression ability, in case of "detailed descriptive ability," "various shapes using ability," and "creative symbolizing ability," the experiment group reflected a greater increase than the comparison group.
However, among the lower elements of picture expression ability, in "difference between basis figure and line annexing degree," "various colors using ability," "harmonizing composition," and "symbolizing ability to related subject," the increase in the experiment group was higher than the comparison group, but the difference was not significant.
In conclusion, through art cooperation activity picture expression ability was increased. By using various forms and detailed descriptions, the increase was reflected effectively in the form of creative pictures.
According to this researching on art cooperation, children's prosocial behavior and picture expression ability may be increased. This finding may be incorporated in art education programs for young children with regards to practical cooperation activities.
