The figure that my father drew an alter portrait of Buddha that I used to see fully, it was not strange in my eyes. Because my father was Keumeo (a man who draw a Buddhist statue). But while I was growing, I wanted to try to learn and study it someday.
In my university days, I was interested in Buddhist art but we don't have exact books about a theory in actuality. It was not easy for me to find data about Buddhist art. Therefore the topic of this thesis is about Keumeo, Kim Ilseop but I just had a few data. So I had to go in search of them by myself. It was the Buyong temple that I looked for first. Because he stayed in this temple before he died. So I decided to solve problems one by on from here.
This thesis has the contents that I considered and make a study about a work from a great master of Buddhist art, Kim Ilseop and his master, Boeung that made a contribution toward development of Buddhist art to Keumho. Besides I looked into the origin of Buddhist art and a tangled table of Buddhist art and investigated Buddhist art that has transmitted from generation to generation between the people in Joseon Dynasty. We call the men who draw Buddhist art Keumeo. I reordered looking for the etymology of a name. I wondered about that a lot but I wanted to study so I am deeply moved because I could write this thesis.
The birth of Buddhist art budded out naturally by students who had a long for him after Buddha entered Nirvana. They kept his footprints, Boryun, Jwadae(a term of respect for a chair) and all kinds of things that concerned with Buddha's life. Buddhist art was budded by itself keeping Buddha's bones that gained from cremation.
After Nirvana around 500 years later, we could search the visual point in the area of Knadara and Matura. They spreaded Buddhism and Buddhist art was spreaded at the same time. In our country, Buddhist art was spreaded in three countries from China. At this point of time, we can find a little changing. For example, face, colors and shapes etc.
In Unified Silla era, Buddhism was popular but in Joseon Dynasty through Koryeo, the shape of a Buddhist image was changed remarkably. But after passing war in the late Joseon Dynasty. The country recognized Buddhism to some degree. Many Buddhism events were accomplished by leading of country. Many temples were repaired in the old temple sites which is burnt and is ruined. In addition. Making a Buddhist statue and Buddhist rituals and services of Buddhist art were worked.
In the late Joseon, we can see that a characteristic of Buddhist art appeared in Confucian religion and a folk belief. Sinjungdo, Chilsungdo, Sansindo, Yongwangdo, Jowangdo, Samjangdo, Gamrodo were spreaded between the common people and people in general. Therefore it was also time to make Kwaebultenghwa with a great deal because many believers in Buddhism went on increasing.
As Buddhist rituals and services were active, a lot of Keumeo were produced and they almost had Buddhist priests who took change of Buddhist rituals and services of Buddhist art.
I have studied a Buddhist painting from a priest, Keumho who worked in Magoksa in the late Joseon and Boeung who worked centering around Kap temple to a Buddhist priest, Ilseop and analyzed a priest, Kim Ilseop and his student's works.
I tried to make people understand by studying the name of a Buddhist statue and drawing a picture. It's the fact that we don't have exact guide books because they were handed down personally basic painting given from their master and work. I want you to understand about Buddhist art through this thesis.
I hope to be treated in education places to some agree and I want you to take advantage of them for education data to teach younger students.
We have a little books about Buddhist painting but I know that it's no enough. So I want many Buddhism artist to study more about Buddhist art and develop it and it will contribute toward Buddhist development, I hope.
Finally, I hope that this thesis will enlarge understanding to help many people that nobody know Buddhist art.
