In play therapy, the relationship between a therapist and parents is important as well as the relationship between the therapist and children. Moreover, it supports therapy, and helps their opinion come to an agreement. Furthermore, the therapist and parents should maintain the cooperation to obtain positive effects of the play therapy because therapeutic effects become higher when parents actively participate in consultation, and act as facilitators. This means that parents can take an active and important part as one of the therapeutic variable factors. The therapy makes better conclusion when the therapist and parents form a therapeutic alliance.
The purpose of this study is to find out the therapeutic alliance perception of the clients mother and the play therapist, and the relationship between the objective relation level and the therapeutic alliance of the clients mother. On top of that, the significance of this study is that the therapist understands better the clients mother in the early stage of the play therapy, and on the base of the understanding, the therapist can also makes the successful therapeutic alliance with the clients mother. Therefore it can lead to effective consultation.
The subject of this study is one of the clients mothers from the third to the twelfth sessions of parents counseling.
In order to measure the object level of the participant, Parks (1998) Separation Individuation Scale (SIS) was used. To measure the therapeutic alliance of the subject and the play therapist, Horvath and Greenbergs (1989) Working Alliance Inventory (WAI) was used, which was changed once by Kang (1995) and again by this researcher for the appropriate purpose of this study.
To analyze the general characteristics of the subject, frequency and its percentage were gained by using the SPSS statistical program. The factor analysis and Cronbachs were calculated to investigate the validity and reliability of the subject for the object level. Cronbachs was calculated to extract the validity of the therapeutic alliance. For the examination of the conclusion, ANOVA and T-test programs were operated.
The results of this study are as follows.
First, the therapeutic alliance that the subject perceives according to the consulting styles showed the meaningful difference in goal concurrence, task agreement, and emotional relation.
Second, the therapeutic alliance that the play therapist perceives according to the consulting styles showed the meaningful difference only in the emotional relation but not in goal concurrence and task agreement.
Third, the therapeutic alliance that the subject perceives according to the object relation level showed the meaningful difference in goal concurrence, task agreement, and emotional relation.
Lastly, the therapeutic alliance that the play therapist perceives according to the object relation level of the subject showed no meaningful difference in goal concurrence, task agreement, and emotional relation.
